Does anyone have any historical stats on player turnover? I've been watching the reds since 1978, and back in the day I don't think there was a transfer window and loanees were a rare thing. For many years we seemed to have smallish squads and there didn't seem to be as much chopping and changing from one game to the next, and also not as many players on the bench. Games changed hell of a lot in that time. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
It certainly has, back then players were brought in and sold as the season progressed, even as late as 1996/7 when we brought in Super John in November. There was the transfer deadline of course at the end of march, when there was a flurry of activity (Paul Futcher and Calvin Plummer brought in from Derby on deadline day 1985?). My earliest memory of loanees would be Brian McCord which was 1989/90, I could be wrong, but back in the days of Glavin/Banks/MacCarthy, I don't think the loan system existed at all.
Where would we be now without loans, we certainly wouldnt have come up last season and wouldnt have got anywhere near Wembley without them. So the loan system is a good one if its used well, but not relied upon all the time!
Always intrigued to look back at those programmes from late 70's, early 80's, when I started going regularly - the results pages at the end of a season - the starting XI was virtually unchanged, week after week after week. A much harder game then too.
Certainly, useful when used properly but over-reliance is dangerous. As long as we keep bringing young lads through, along with players from lower leagues with the potential to develop, we'll be ok.
There would be the odd change, but the programmes had already been printed with a probable 11 Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
No I mean the double page results spread, with the attendance and the team/goals/subs listed. Barely changed, unless someone genuinely got clobbered.
I can only remember us having the occasional loan in the 1980's - David Johnson, Alan Ainscow, Siggi Jonsson, Andy Blair, Jake Finlay and Trevor Aylott spring to mind but not sure if there was a rule. Seem to recall loans being a month at a time? If you remember, the match day squad was only 12 players, then 13 in the late 80's with two subs, then a sub goalie some point. Didn't the current loan system come into play as a concession for clubs that may struggle with the transfer window limiting them in the event of several injuries. Sent from my SM-T710 using Tapatalk
Ah right! I'd forgotten about that. It's ages since I bought or read a programme. Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
Some right names there mate. How the chuff did you remember some of them?! You're right though, they tended to be strictly one month. Didn't Jonson play in that team that lost 7 on the bounce at the start of the season? Sent from my SM-G850F using Tapatalk
I think he scored a very pleasant winner for us v Leeds. Amazing to get someone of his calibre to Barnsley.
I've been a Red for 30 years from next season. Throughout that time we have always had to sell our best players to survive. Given the catchment area and the limited resources of a succession of owners unless a very rich benefactor comes in it will always be the thus. Looking at the stats for this season we have brought 20 players in ( to add to existing numbers). Of that figure 7 are on permanent contracts, 7 on loan and 6 on free transfers. We have let a total of 21 players out. Of that number 4 have gone on permanent contracts, 7 on loan and 10 on free transfers. Sadly due to Patrick Cryne's poor health we face worrying times probably last experienced in 2002 when we went into receivership. The only difference this time round is there might be some cash at the bank, we have one of the brightest young managers in the EFL and we lie 14th in the second tier of English football. Patrick and Paul and the staff at Oakwell are doing their best in very difficult circumstances. It's certainly a job I wouldn't like because opinion is diverse and not always constructive or helpful. Without sounding sacrilegious it's true what a mate of mine used to say whenever he was criticised at work. " Only one man ever tried to please everybody and his reward was to be crucified on a mountain between two thieves."!!! Let's get behind ' em. Come on you Reds.
The loan system existed well before those days. For example, in the 1970's, straight off the top of my head we brought in the likes of Phil Tingay, John Lathan, Steve Deere & Ian Butler on loan.
Thank you, Dave. I doubt I'll be as prolific with regards to posting in comparison to the past, though.
That's a shame. I have to admit I haven't posted much recently, not keen on the bickering. Just decided not to be a part of threads which descend into insults. I like differing opinions and respect folk who back them up without resorting to tit for tat abuse.
