When I was a young kid in the 1950's we use to play other villages at football arranged at school and then we used to walk 11, 12 of us to away matches we devised a battle cry after the Welsh National Anthem and this is how it went (if i remember right)." In the land the land of charcoil shouiting pellets up a nanigoats arsoil etc, etc.

I think that is still the words they use. I could be wrong as my Welsh is as poor as my Barnsley

My hen laid a haddock, one hand oiled a flea,

Glad farts and centurions threw dogs in the sea.

I could stew a hare here and brandish Dan’s flan,

Don’s ruddy bog’s blocked up with sand.

Dad! Dad! Why don’t you oil Auntie Glad?

Can’t whores appear in beer bottle pies?

O butter the hens as they fly!

That sounds like "Men of Harlech" which isn't the national anthem. We used to sing a ditty to the "Scottish Soldier" but I can only remember the opening stanza.
    There was a soldier,
    A Scottish soldier,
    He didn't half perspire,
The night his kilt caught fire.

Yes, it's a fantastic emotional tune.
When you hear thirty thousand voices singing it it does have a profound effect. UNLIKE the feckin stupid Wembley band of one trumpet and a drum farting out our "anthem" every few minutes..... embarrassing and pathetic.
But the one anthem locally that I can't get my head round is the Scottish one, Flower of Scotland. I can't follow it, don't get the tune... it baffles me. Surely they have better than that.... some Heeland fling or a Gay Gordon.

Incredible. Now how can they give the NFL as the loudest spectator sport in the Guinness book of records?? All they do is scream on the 3rd downs, surely screaming doesn't count...

I always find a good rendition of Flower of Scotland to be pretty awesome.

The Labour Partys anthem The Red Flag always brings a tear then they always follow it by Jerusalem which for me is better than God save the Queen.

Most impressive spectacles in sport are both from Rugby Union.
    First - The Haka
Second - the Welsh National Anthem sang in Wales

Watch both of these then listen to the limp, wet, mornji national anthem sang by us English at any event.

I agree about Jerusalem. It should be our national anthem.

Why not? It's stirring, nostalgic, it has a wide appeal and is popular amongst people of all classes and backgrounds. People sing it with pride and gusto so I can't think of a better song to be adopted as the English national anthem.
