We've been at home most Boxing Days in recent years and usually to a Lancashire club - Bolton, Burnley, Blackburn, Blackpool and now Preston. When we were away we had Preston. We had Birmingham about 5 years ago at home but otherwise Lancashire at home is the norm. This can't be a coincidence so why can't they give us a Yorkshire club?
Promotion year we were due to play Bury a Gigg Lane but it was postponed because of all the rains and flooding. Think we went bottom that day as well. Had a good morning/afternoon in Ashton-under- Lyne with the Courthouse Reds
Beat Blackburn convincingly last Boxing Day. Was with my Blackburn supporting mate and will never let him live down the defence at the end of the game that we “will be relegated come the end of the season anyway” !
I was thinking that we always seem to be at home on Boxing Day so was confused by this thread. Glad you’ve confirmed I wasn’t losing my mind!
Maybe because Boxing Day is a "big crowd" day and they avoid scheduling derbies so as not to deprive clubs of a big payday on a routine date? Can't think of another reason and we certainly used to do it. I remember the time we battered Wendies 0-0 darn tWell in the Hunter era. We wiped the bloody floor with em for 90 solid minutes, Glavin failing with 3 or 4 one on ones when you'd have bet your house on him. Trouble was Bob Bolder had one of THOSE games when he stopped the lot. I can still see Parker bulleting a header at the postage stamp from no range at all, and this big gloved hand appearing from nowhere to turn it round the post. One of the best goalkeeping performances I've ever seen.
I think the idea is that you play someone fairly local to limit travelling times over Christmas period but not local enough to be a Derby as police resources are stretched on Boxing Day as it is
