So, no MP in South Yorkshire outside of Sheffield will actually have been born in South Yorkshire then, if the constituency results are the same as 2015.
I used to be a Labour Party member and did leafleting etc back in 1997 for Blair. I cancelled my membership in disgust after the "WMD" bo**ocks. I joined because I believed it was the best way to get the Tories out - and look what we replaced them with.... After a few years of not really taking any notice of politics, my interest was sparked by the Green Party and I joined them in time for the last General Election. You can take the pee if you like and say crap like "it's a wasted vote" etc BUT The Green Party are the only ones that put the Environment first and the only party to oppose HS2. Don't waste your vote on the same old same old, vote for real change.
Being born outside of South Yorkshire is not necessarily a problem - people go to university, get married and start work/careers or might have other reasons for moving around from where they were born. My parents moved to Barnsley when I was 9, so even though I've lived in the area for over 30 years I would fail on that. I'm not too keen on the practice of parachuting favoured candidates into safe seats though - candidates should have an affinity with the constituency through living and working in the region for at least a couple of years before selection.
The problem with the FPTP system is that the Greens, with ~4% of the vote, will get maybe 1-2 MPs. They should get 25-30 MPs if we had a proportional system. In that case it wouldn't be as wasted as it will be now and they could work within Parliament to pursue their agenda (which I broadly agree with).
Quite. This is why I despise the Lib-Dems. Their condition for joining the coalition was a referendum on PR. What they accepted was a referendum on a specific system which wasn't the best type of PR and was difficult for the layman to understand and so was rightly rejected. The referendum should have been more like the Brexit one, a simple yes/no to the concept of PR which (if accepted) would then have been followed by allowing a choice of several types types of PR. Basically they sold out for the chance of government, implementing Tory policies and ended all prospect for electoral reform for at least a generation. Clegg is in the same league as Blair.
Ironically all bliars musings from the 80s are turning up with not quite the same pro Eu rhetoric.. Its amazing how bundles of cash can change your mind about things.
Clegg wanted an EU referendum ,and Farron wanted a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty (quite right actually) . Then they see where their political futures could lie.....
Aye - Tom Watson's a real head turner - the couple look really well matched - I wonder what first attracted the ambitious young lady to the influential deputy party leader after dating influential spin doctor and assistant to Ed Balls Alex Belardinelli. What a happy coincidence that she fell in love with some fat bloke practically old enough to be her father who could further her political career. No doubt she'll have a lot to say on issues such as equality and all that having been previously selected as a candidate on all women short lists.. Really looking forwards to being represented by her given her obvious passion for the area and the seat not simply being a stepping stone as she climbs the greasy pole. First Dugher and Jarvis now this.. Are the people of Barnsley really that daft that we keep voting for these people who are simply using our area for their own ends.
I have looked through the internet to find a biog but she hasn't been wikid. I know that she's been a teacher and now something to do with the GMB. Could any of you politically aware people please educate me as to her political stance within the Labour party ? Thanks
Many Politicians/candidates are not from the Constiuency they either represent or hope to represent. Not being in the political fold I don't know of anyone else locally who may or may not be up to the Task. The Roy Masons are from a bygone era. I' just got a good feeling about this one.
She's his ex but did they split up because it would look bad her being parachuted in and then they'll get back together after the election? Labour Party are the most bent party going so wouldn't surprise me.
