    Lol.

What I mean is, is it womb (as in a woman's bits) or womb (as in womble)?

Weatherman on calendar says it like the woman's bits.

I can honestly say I've never heard it pronounced like a womble.

Wumwell by all locals and womansbitswell by anyone else reading off an autocue

It's Wumwell to me. Just like Cudworth is Cudeth and Dodworth is Doderth. And Athersley is ****.

Wombwells' original place name was Wambas Spring, way back in the middle ages. I read it in a Readers Digest Atlas of Gt Britain when I was younger, about 45 yrs ago.

Just looked at Wikipedia, and Wombwell was Wombas Well, not Spring. Never mind.

People from Barnsley say Wumwell. People from outside Barnsley pronounce it Woomwell. Train announcers do. I always laugh. Back in the 70s there was always an advert at the Odeon that pronounced it Woomwell. I always laughed.

Just as an aside, when the Welland estate (Scots village) was being built in the fifties (I think) the name was derived from the end parts of WombWELL and HoylAND councils.

I'm from outside barnsley and I'd say it like womble (because that's what it looks like to me). My last choice would be Wumwell as there is no feckin 'U' in it. It's logical capn.

I remember I played in a tournament in Blackpool for Wombwell and one of the referees pronounced us as womble. I'm not sure if he was taking the piss or not but that's the only time I've ever heard anyone say it like that.

No 'r' in either. Keyboard getting involved.

I was born in Jump in 1952 and came to live in Wombwell in 1954 until 1988, and in both junior/senior schools we all pronounced it as Wumwell.
