Supporters' chief Cliff Ginnetta has joined the opposition to Barnsley's decision to hike their ticket prices for Leicester City's Championship visit to south Yorkshire on September 10.

Match-day admission has gone up from £23 to £30 for the clash at Oakwell, and Ginnetta said he knows fans who are planning a boycott, which was revealed in Gary Silke's Mercury column yesterday.

"This is a bit of a worrying trend and I don't think it is Barnsley's best interests either," said Ginnetta, the chairman of the official supporters group.

"Surely, they would prefer us to bring a lot of fans who will also spend money on the day.

"I don't think fans have any real objection to paying high prices for the derby games against Derby and Nottingham Forest, but £30 for Barnsley is a bit excessive. Perhaps it's because we always seem to win there!"

Ginnetta said it is also a disappointing move as his members are finding it tougher to commit to home and away fixtures because of cash restraints.

"It's tough for a lot of them and they have to pick and choose their games," he said.

"Something like this will put a lot of them off. Putting up the ticket by £7 is a lot and I don't agree with it."

A Barnsley spokesman said the clash against Leicester was classed as a Category A fixture, with category B games costing £23.

"Leicester were put in Category A because of the size of the club and its ambition based on their signings in the summer," said the spokesman.

"We like to think we are still one of the most competitive clubs in the Championship when it comes to the price of away tickets."

I agree ES. I have a feeling that this is going to backfire on the Club in a big way.
I just wish that they hadn't done it.
As much as we love our club away fans are going to think: "I'm not paying that to go to Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarnsley!"

To be fair they really cannot preach about ticket prices after they dropped the prices for the home fans and left those for the away fans at full price. Infact I can remember bloore shouting from they roof to boycott it. ...

I've got to agree Tina, surely its better to have a good away following in the north stand spending money rather than alienating them, it doesn't make much sense to me.

Just going to post the same. Surely if they "alaways seem to win", it would be money well spent?

Whilst the irony seems to be lost on Leicester fans

Given their policies recently, the category system of pricing is just plain wrong and should be dropped asap, in fact the FL/FA should ban the practice.

Home fans who pay on the day and aren't members of the 1912 club will also be paying £30 entry. They can't expect us to charge away fans less!

Re: Whilst the irony seems to be lost on Leicester fans

I remember chanting "You only paid a tenner!" at their game a few years back.
As we are always classed as an 'unattractive fixture' they made the decision to charge all their own fans a tenner for the game in order to get a full house, which they did, whilst we all had to pay full whack. I think Hume scored for them that day and we ended up losing. It generated a lot of bad feeling which is why I wasn't happy when we did the same to Forest later on.
It's bad practice in my opinion and causes bad feelings, unrest and uncertainty amongst the fans and in the end what possible good does it do?

The thing to remember is that except for the tocket price, the club (perhaps) does not make anything extra regardless off the size of the following!

It's got no justification imho. If clubs want to do 'offers' then they should be across the board, away fans get the ****ty end of the stick anyway.

It's not april fools is it...

Of all the clubs, I didn't expect Leicester to boycott us because of ticket prices. They've been doing it to us for years, that's the reason i've never been to Leicester. Wasn't it them who bumped up the ticket price to away fans a few years ago and dropped it for home fans?

    Football fans really are fickle.

BFC supporters trust view when Leicester did similar to us

"The trust would urge all Barnsley supporters to boycott the game and write to Leicester to protest at these ticketing arrangements.
"In addition, the trust are interested to hear views on a peaceful demonstration outside the Walkers Stadium to show our disappointment on Leicester's pricing."

Re: BFC supporters trust view when Leicester did similar to us

They dont like it back up em do they? hardly anyone from Leicester will take notice of that boycott, whats a £7 increase on an away day expense? The cost of just over 2 pints! and they'll be paying £30 at 75% of their away games this season. Well done BFC you should have used this scheme years ago, we've been getting fleeced at away games for years and if they're using the excuse but it shouldn't be £30 at Barnsley then it shouldn't be £30 if you're playing Barnsley at home.

    Yours

    Non BFC season ticket holder.

Well actually, no, it doesn't matter a jot to us. Our ONLY revenue stream on matchdays is the ticket revenue, so like it or lump it away fans.

Obviously they are not being hypocritical so I would assume that they are boycotting ALL grounds with a category policy whether it works to their disadvantage or not.

    Quite so.

The "1912 Club" should be abolished and match day prices returned to what they were to begin with.

    Car parking revenue and Programmes.

For a community club like ours some businesses in the Town/community will get less income.

Wonder how many years they have made this rallying call for Ipswich/QPR games.

I agree with scrapping the category system.
