My first away game was Chesterfield, near christmas 1967. Can't remember too many details (without looking up archives) other than we won coming from behind and that it was bl**dy cold with snow on the ground. It was a pub trip so after match bus stopped at a pub on way back and all us young uns had to sit on bus frozen as we weren't allowed on premises in any circumstances while dads were in pub singing our victory. how different now when i take grandkids away and we go in wetherspoons have a meal together etc. more civilised now eh.
Think it was 1981 at Millmoor - it was the return fixture of the Ian Banks hat-trick against Rotherham earlier in the season. It was Bl@@dy freezing and we were on the front row of the stand and featured on tv the following day as Banksy did his warm-up right in front of us before the game. Well, when I say "featured" all you could see was three freezing little girls (Fired was one of them) huddled together, covered in hats and scarves, so our faces were barely discernible. After the game I remember going down an alley back to the main road squeezed between 2 police horses, with all the away fans herded along and treated like cattle by the police. Oh the joys of watching your team away from home in the 1980s!
i dont remember the date or anything particular about the day etc.. but i was about 8 or sumat, and it was some kind of cup game at Swilsbro, where we beat Wendy on pens.. think the game was 3-3 but like i say, my memory of it is hazy.. maybe someone could help??
BUT, after that Wendy game, the earliest away game i remember the clearest... was in 94-95 when my dad took me to Meadow Lane to watch us beat Notts County 3-1. Danny was manager, and SCORED. i think Shez was sent off too.. we played in that green away shirt with the red n white pin stripes. i quite liked that shirt.. it was Dannys 1st season, and the 2 Andys, Lidds and Payton were formidable that year.. a quality partnership. Taggs was at the back, Redders in midfield, Fleming and Eaden. great footballing team with PROPER footballers, and a fair few warriors.. its always the away game i remember as my 1st despite about 10 before it.. it just stays with me for some reason.. pretty much all my mates in Elsecar and at school were Wendy fans, and on that same day in Notts, we found out after the game that Nottm Forest, beat Wendy 7-1 or sumat.. it gave me a lot of joy at school that week! and County manager Howard Kendall was sacked afterwards.. ahh, those were the days.. i love threads like this
thanx for that u two.. Zenith Data thingybob, that was it. i was born in 82 so must be that un.. been to WAAAY too many Wendys away, and not seen many wins.
you can always rely on't oldens whitey just come and visit us in old peoples kn*ckers yard and update us on latest reds news in a couple a years
Sometimes I feel ancient, yet sometimes I feel like a spring chicken, when that happens I just pop the oven on and shove a fesh bird in for 1hr and half
Mmmmm Liverpool away, league cup, surely was first away game? Rotherham away was season after I'm sure? We lost 1-0.
i feel old reading Phils posts. and most the Reds fans on my twitter are 16 and 17, and were babies when we were int Prem! so if i feel old at 29, then jeez u lot must feel pre-historic! lol
we had twitter when i was young albeit you had to put a stamp on and wait a few days for reply otherwise same thing.
Re: Mmmmm You may be right - a quick check of soccerbase indicates we played Liverpool in Jan 1982 and Rotherham away in October 1982. Both memorable for the bl**dy awful weather!
Doncaster Rovers circa 1969. An evening game on a Friday when the Reds played in their old amber away strip. I think the game was a draw but I do remember it was cold and the wooden seating was not inspiring. I was about 8 years old but it still didnt put me off!!
manchester city away in the cup in 92/3, we lost two nil and kipper ran on the pitch! i can remember that the lavs had broken down and flooded so everywhere we walked inside the stand we were ankle deep in p***. after the game it went absoloutly ballistic with fighting, i'd never seen anything like it in my life i was only 9 but i stood there watching with my mouth open until my dad dragged me to the coach.
My first away game was Cambridge United in the 3rd round of FA Cup, either 81 or 82 I think. We lost 1-0. Went with Royston Legion and we stopped off in Newark for a night out on the way back. Police escort around all the pubs. First away league game was a couple of weeks later at Wednesday where we won thanks to a late goal by Glavin who came on as sub.
