Overheating as in switching itself off, or it's just getting hot?

Check underneath that the fan is still working, it may have packed in. But if is working and it's just getting hot, put something under it (book etc.). If you have it on your knee or carpet then it can't circulate air properly.

Re: try this device or one similar

If it's switching off, then more likely the vents are blocked or the cooling fan inside has stopped working or running badly. You may be able to see the fan through the vents. Check it's moving and you should feel warm air being pushed out. You may also hear it, although not to be mistaken for the hard drive spinning.

they both do a good job

in keeping the laptop cooler..but as many have said on here do check the vents and inlets on the machine itself for clogging

    Yes mate.

Go buy one of those aerosol air dusters and blow the fans and vents through with it whilst having the hoover running.

    Should work a treat.

It sounds like your fan mate or like another poster has said the vents could be blocked but most likely its the fan. Easy enough to check though.

Did you clean out the exhaust vents and around the fan?

If not give it a go or alternatively, give me the laptop and I will dispose of it for you!!!
