The truth about drugs in football

Tonight on C4. Apparently going to name Garry O'connor for testing positive for cocaine. Worth a watch. I guess this happened at Barnsley and a reason we got rid?

 

I think we got rid cause he was sh-it mate. He has had a coke problem for years (allegedly) so it could have been any time.

 

Interesting to hear Don Rowing's thoughts on it as we were obviously sold a dud.

I don't understand why we don't take on the italian method to be honest.

I believe Birmingham, and more so the spineless FA, should've informed Barnsley of O'connor's drug taking.

But it shouldn't be any type of secret, at least not the club who are hiring his services.

Even I knew about it, so surely the people actually inside the game knew?

Exactly, i'd heard the rumours. So if it was a well known fact surely he should have been tested on a more regular basis.

If Don seriously knew nothing about this then it just adds to his list of incompetencies

In my opinion, the responsibility rests with the F.A. & Birmingham to be honest and open with this. There is no justification in them covering this up.
After all, which rumours are to be believed and which are to be ignored? Foe example, there are some bizarre rumours on the internet trying to claim Elvis is actually dead.

They even managed to get Don's name wrong on the caption - he was Don Rowling.

Interesting programme, raised a good point about whether selling clubs should declare failed drugs tests when moving players on. It implied O'Connor's failed test and suspension was covered up as a groin injury.

When he first came on loan and played against Leeds, O'Connor looked the real deal. I recall Robins publicly advising the other players to watch and learn - cause he won't be here long! When you look back, it was all too good to be true that we got a further loan period, then a season-long contract. We now have a good idea why O'Connor was unable to maintain his level of performance. While its easy for us outsiders to comment with the benefit of hindsight, a professional organisation should have the corporate intelligence and expertise to sniff such things out (sorry!). If something looks too good to be true in life, it usually is!

 

Looking back it is clear to see he had a line or 2 at ht in the Leeds game. Obvious now.

 

Why did we get a Scottish international for next to nowt in the first place..........

I think Robins knew exactly what the position was with O'Conner......i.e. great player but he's had a drugs problem but is just getting over it
Robins took the gamble...........and it backfired

O'Conner back to his best would have been a terrific signing for Barnsley

As for footballers and drugs.............most footballers have had a low education, prinicipally because they have devoted their lives to football........couple this with, fit young guys, shed loads of money, loads of time on their hands........why should anyone be surprised when we hear news relating to footballers involving...............girls, booze, cars, drugs

Think someone said on here when we signed him that he'd got a bit of a drug history. So how can the fans know and the club doesn't, maybe they just turned a blind eye to it. Let's be honest we wouldn't be the first club, I mean how many clubs has Adrian Mutu had since being sacked by Chelsea, and he's been done since then as well.

 

FA spokesman....."Don's a muppet"

FA spokesman just been on 5Live, when asked if he could agree with Barnsley's disappointment at not being told of O'Connors drug ban when Birmingham sold him to them, he responded by saying that in this day and age with all the information streams and medical/technical know how available, without wishing to comment on individual clubs, he believed all clubs would do their own due diligence.

In other words...........Don, AGAIN!

Sorry but this thing is big and shouldn't be left to individual clubs. That response seems typical of the FA burying their heads in the sand again. Are they not the powers that be and the policemen of all things football in this country?
Incompetence, inconsistencey prevails yet again within the FA.

one of my mates that sometimes posts on here said when o'connor signed that it was a well know fact in birmingham the o'c liked a bit of the white stuff but people on here was telling my mate he was talking *******. looks like he was telling the truth now
