How would you go about encouraging fans back to Oakwell? Without waving a magic wand and getting us playing like Barcelona.

Obviously lowering the price of the categories would be a massive help along with stronger advertising on Dearne fm, radio Sheffield etc or even using those new electronic road signs if possible lol.

Would the club consider partnering with the council, nhs, local gyms to get cheaper admission if they are an employee or a member of the gym? Barnsley premier leisure do a similar thing where if u work for the council, nhs and some other companies you can get cheaper memberships.

The club needs to reduce ticket prices. I have a decent enough job but I can't afford £30 for a home match. I can't commit to a season ticket and so I am getting into a rut of not really going anyone. £30 is totally unrealistic.

I was a season ticket holder from about 87 to 2007. My son is three and is showing an interest in football now. I applaud the clubs approach with free season tickets for youngster and I will perhaps but a season ticket again when he is a bit older as a result of that offer

I think they are missing a trick with a failure to provide a club bar. I must be missing something and it must not be economical but I think it would encourage people to come and enjoy the whole match experience. Been to Leeds a few times recently and their pre match bars are excellent, save for being full of Leeds fans.

off the top of my head

Fact is it's too expensive everywhere. Clubs all over have to accept that and work accordingly.
Even £15 is a fair amount for an afternoon's "entertainment". I don't think BFC are doing anything massively wrong - they've encouraged kids along BUT I would definitely look at other ways of income & getting people into the BFC habit.
    1. Pre match. Massive market of un tapped income. The amounts being spent on ale in town could all be going to BFC if they hadn't messed up the ground design.
If the ground was welcoming enough for fans pre match, I'm sure more would be down early doors & that would have knock on effects on sales of refreshments & merchandise. Make it kid friendly, so that families can come down and watch the live match on screen. All that space under the East Stand to go at, it's such a waste of space. I know there are cost implications, but there has to be a way.
    2. Real Ale/ decent beers. Not just in Preedys (which in my opinion is a complete **** up). Get shut of the external catering, and take the profits. Real ale festival around the last game of the season?
    3. Get kids to have a sense of belonging with their club. Kids often "like" clubs because of their first shirt. Get BFC football shirts everywhere in town..... from a very young age. Obviously BFC would have to work out a budget or find a sponsor, but how about every kid that turns 6 in Barnsley schools, gets a free replica shirt. Sense of belonging from the minute they are old enough to think about it, and they're now all wearing them in after school activity sessions. Good publicity for a potential local sponsor.(Perry's)Could be part of a wider Barnsley Healthy Schools initiative.
    4. Corporate Memberships for the terraces? i.e. Open season tickets for companies to buy in bulk. e.g. you have to get 10 STs minimum, but they can be used flexibly by anyone in the company. What that does for BFC is help bring in floating supporters, and give them leads into local companies.
    5. Atmosphere. Encourage the bringing in of flags, give scarves away at the start of the season, make folks proud to be Bansley fans again. (Huge BFC flag to pass around)

Paul, I think it is going to take a long time to get the fans back.
Over the last few years it has seemed that the club have not given a damn about the fans, only paying lip service to them when they want their money for season tickets etc. This in in my opinion of course.
The PR coming from Oakwell has been shocking, of course there are some that will just put up with anything, because BFC is more than just something to do on Saturday afternoon, but once the average fan realises that there is more to life than just being taken for granted and is fed up with the ever spiralling cost and lack of value for money, then it is harder for the club to get them back.
I know of many that hardly ever go now, but they are still BFC fans, only they feel the product on offer at Oakwell gives them little to get excited about, they have seen the same things come from each manager , hoiw we wil be playing good football, be fitter than ever etc. and have seen bugger all in real terms.
The actual experience at Oakwell is poor too. The catering is garbage in the stands at least, cant comment on the Exec boxes,**** poor service at sky high prices, why these things are not under the clubs control is crazy, the music played before the match is rubbish.the entrance music has been shocking, the bar areas are a joke, none in the Ponty End at all.
I would like to see kids getting in free for games such as Watford etc, get some of the youth squad out into the schools giving tickets away, free entry if an adult accompanies them, get the kids more involved and they will stay for life. Get them hooked early.
I would love to see some of the players in the town centre (not in the pubs) talking to people, giving out stickers etc, anything to get the kids and parents to think about Barnsley Football Club, not Man Utd, Chelsea, Man City etc.
I would like to hear the manager sound like he wants the fans there, not just to blame them. I would like to hear from someone at the club in the media, someone that actually sounds like they want more fans at Oakwell, someone that wants to make Oakwell a happy jumping place, because whenever we hear a spokesman from BFC on the radio or tv, they always seem so depressed.

I would also like to watch a good game of football, not just once in a while, but regularly, the fans can accept getting beaten if they think the team has given everything, but if they think they are being short changed, then they give rise to their feeling, which as we have seen is not good for anything. The fans will back the team, if the team are worth backing.

This was a massive problem after the strike when some crowds dipped into the 3,000's - these are difficult times financially and people really can't afford these prices - it took years to get the crowds back up - we need to look at pricing for one to arrest the slide

Speaking as someone who's always lived on the "Periphery" - the club should do more to get fans from the surrounding area; everyone within 10 miles of the ground should be a potential customer, not just if you were born, bread and died in Birdwell, etc.

In my opinion, Paul, there are some terrific suggestions on this thread which should be well within the capabilities of an established Championship club. I just wish I could make a positive contribution to those already mentioned. Unfortunately, as yet, I can't.

Do you know something Philip, stop posting about something you do not understand, stick to your silly little life, playing on you PS3 or whatever it is, stick to your HTC phone, you keep paying stupid money for ****e food and crap cans of ****.
I wish you actually lived in the real world instead of some fantasy world where things get done for you and you dont have to pay for anything, where your mum does everything for you, some day all theser things will cease to be then my friend I will welcome you to the real world with a pint or two.
Sorry I forgot, you will never meet any real person because you are afraid.

    Lower ticket prices
    Simplify ticket prices. No categories.
Improve access to refreshments. Cheaper prices, more choice, quicker serving times. Not an unrealistic request in the 21st century.
Bars in ALL sections of the stadium. None of this crap about the ponty end being too small to sell alcohol because it isn't true. There are grounds in this country with much smaller stands (space wise) that sell alcohol.
Listen to what the customer wants and forget an aging mans personal preference. It is totally ridiculous that while supporters are asking for the real BFC themetune to be brought back we are having to endure such music as the rocky theme tune solely because Don Rowing wants it.
Reduce the volume of the tannoy system so that supporters can hear themselves talk.
Give toby tyke some balls. He used to be great entertainment for kids and adults alike, now all he does is hides in a corner. At times its hard to remember that we have a mascot.
USE the TV's under the stands. This season theyre hardly ever on and when they are all they show is an empty pitch before games and at half time. If I wanted to watch grass grow i'd stay at home and get on my hands and knees in the garden. A live sky sports/espn match should be shown before EVERY home game where possible. If there isn't a match then sky sports news should be shown.
Haul the manager into the office and explain to him that he is the public face of BFC and that EVERYTHING he says and does is PR whether that is good or bad and that he can't carry on slagging off the customers whether he is doing that blatantly or trying to be subtle and taking little swipes.
Remind the fans that we have an owner because I for one cant even remember what he sounds like and the way things are going it looks like the next words that come from him in public will be a plea of guilty or not guilty.
Use the local media to promote the club. I've heard Don Rowing on the radio once since the season started and that was to promote the england game. Brilliant, no promoting of our matches but on there to promote someone elses.
Schools schools schools. Get out there and send players into schools. Give kids free tickets and let their parents bring them along. They will come back.
Posters, send someone from the club out in town and fill the town with posters. Dont just print some at Oakwell and expect the customers to come and put them out. Could you really imagine tesco asking its customers to advertise them? No me neither.
People from outside Barnsley are allowed to come to Barnsley matches too. Wakefields pretty big, how about getting out and advertise there for a change?

They may do but I do know the cost of things unlike hemsworth tyke who is much like dreamboy 'its only £5 more per game than last year, it isn't that much to spend when all I have to buy is sweets every week'

i agree with biglil there are some excellent suggestions all of which the club must be aware of.seems the problem is in the marketing dept of the club, as we all know they didn't capitalise too much on the cup run.but the offers need to come at beginning of season to attract custom not at the end.

The club stop treating its paying customers as cash boys and contempt. A team to be proud of. Tweeks to little things like the marketing and the catering for example.
