my village (200 yards from me) for a traveller site housing 30 caravans. Anyone had to object to similar before? Fcking ridiclous decision.

Re: just received a notice from the local councillor that the council chose the centr I'm not having a go and can understand your concerns, but do you think its a ridiculous decision because of any actual planning reasons or just because its near your house and you don't want it? Have the Local Authority gone through a site identification process through which your village has come out on top? They have a statutory duty to provide Gypsy and Traveller sites to meet the identified need. If you do want to appeal against any decision you need to base it in planning law because not wanting a Gyspy and Travellers site in your village won't have much effect
Re: just received a notice from the local councillor that the council chose the centr It's ridiculous though that people have to put up with the anti-social aspect that these sites bring. And they do bring problems. What about the inevitable drop in house value, who is going to cover that? And what makes me laugh is these sites that allow them to permanently settle. If they are permanently settled then they are not travellers, so how does the stautory duty sit with that, if it is a duty to provide sites for travellers. Have you seen the state of some of these sites, they don't give a **** about their neighbourhood. They are a cancer on this country. Crime will rise, metal and the like starts to disappear, there will be no salt in the salt boxes that the council put out as the thieveing gypos see it as theirs and empty it (they do where I live anyway). Local pubs get taken over by them, ruining them for the previous local patrons. Sorry I just don't agree that we should be forced into accepting the problems that they bring.
Re: just received a notice from the local councillor that the council chose the centr If this goes ahead you have my complete sympathy mate. Nobody should be subjected to having to live within five miles of these people, the noise, the disruption and the anti-social behaviour they will bring with them. Local communities have enough problems of their own with making it ten times worse by setting up a traveller camp. Fight it every step of the way.
Re: just received a notice from the local councillor that the council chose the centr Fight it fight it and fight it somemore. Unless your renting then **** off quickly
Re: just received a notice from the local councillor that the council chose the centr It is for both reasons. There were some sites planned and our village was not in this plan. Then, at the last minute a local gypsy agreed to sell some land that he owns in our village (ironically because his planning applications for 3 houses were knocked back) and this becomes the Council’s “preferred choice” There is one pub in the village and no shops – thus there is not the infrastructure to support such a site It is on a busy main road which already has issues regarding congestion, parking and speeding – this will not help As above, the site was knocked back for planning for 3 houses so I fail to see how it could be accepted for 30 caravans The reality is, these sites bring problems with them. They should not be placed in the centre of small villages where hard working people have saved to buy houses. If it gets the go ahead then I will not be able to (like every other resident) sell my house or have to sell at a reduced price, losing tens of thousands of pounds. Is this fair? No. From my anecdotal experience (and I would say the majority of people’s), Travellers are disrespectful to their community because they do not actually form part of it. If you do not respect the law, why should have claim to a law that protects you? That’s why it is a ridiculous decision.
Re: just received a notice from the local councillor that the council chose the centr better in Selby than Barnsley...unlucky!
Re: just received a notice from the local councillor that the council chose the centr Stick to the first side of the argument. There are some valid points within that which carry legitimacy in planning or strategic land allocation decision. I'm not saying the other points don't have any validity, but they won't necessarily have any impact on the outcome. These are arguments that can be made for any location so you would need to focus on issues specifical to your village and why the site shouldn't be there. Personally I think the issue of gypsy and travellers is a very difficult and complex. I think they suffer huge amounts of prejudice, and the reason why they have over time come to need permenant pitches is that hostility towards them and the law have made it impossible for them to exist as travelling communities. At the same time I don't think the mysoginy that is endemic in many of their communities is acceptable, and they are a cost to the welfare state because of the high levels of illiteracy and health problems. However, having a settled, permenant site may be a solutions to these issues, allowing children to attend regular school and improving health by having decent housing. Don't get me wrong, i can understand your concerns completely. I'm just pointing out the reality is there is a requirement to provide sites and the majority of people won't want those sites near them, so you need to consider reasons beyond not wanting them near you (which from the above you are)
Simple Solution: The residents of the village should purchase 30 caravans & get on the site first. Have that, gypos - we're here & you're not having it. I know - I'm a genius.
Re: Simple Solution: The Good Burghers of Pogmoor thank you and salute your selfless sacrifice! May relations with your new neighbours be harmonious and constructive!
Re: Simple Solution: I can never get my head around a 'travellers' site'... if they settle then they are not 'travellers' and should be subject to council tax, income tax etc.
