There is talk within parliament about bringing back limited controlled standing areas at premier and championship grounds. So if they ripped the seats out of the west stand lower (for example) and made it £15 a game (standing always used to be cheaper because you can cram more people into the same space), would you consider going again?

Rothred: No. Anyone who wants to bring back standing must never have heard of the Hillsborough disaster.

    Jimbob: Yes.

Prices would increase if they put standing areas in at Oakwell

can't just blame standing up for hillsbrough disaster there were other mitigating factors. i've been to other grounds in championship to watch reds. and stood up and there were no problems .

Its fair to say there were other factors, but had it been an all-seater stadium 96 people would probably still be alive. Does it have to be any more complicated than that?

You could argue(I of course wouldn't) that if with the same crowd outside at an FA cup semi, the gates were suddenly opened into a constrained seating area with steel fences at the front, the same mass influx would still result in deaths.

Blaming terracing for all the deaths is slightly oversimplifying it, as the constant calls for justice allude to. Also, I believe (stand to be corrected) it is going all right in the German top flight with admittedly limited terracing.

Hillsbrough was an horrific event but standing up was not the primary reason why those fans died; how many millions of people stood up at football prior to Hillsbrough and didn't die. It is possible to have safe, controlled standing at grounds and I think it could bring back some fans who the game had lost.

It would cost the club money to remove the seats and make the West Stand lower suitable for standing...i.e. higher steps. Why not just have that as a much cheaper area in the ground as it is? Never understood why the West Stand is same price as East Stand when facilities are much worse.

Not really. I can recall the cup final where Liverpool fans stormed the gates to get in and that caused chaos in an all seater stadium where is was lucky no one died.

I went the FSF Fans pariliament in the summer and hey had a trailer with a safe standing terrace on it. It's similar to what the use in many German stadia and incorporates rails. The seats can be locked up or down easily to allow the area to become all seater when European competition dictates.

Depends what you mean. I know discussions on safe standing have occurred with the club and the Supporters Trust in the past and it is cost prohibitive to rip out seats and put in safe standing areas. If the West Stand were ever developed though it might be an option?

Corner between ponty and west stand, ripe for developing as a trial as standing area

Wouldn't cost much to do, probably get 1000 in there, if price is cheape due to lack of a seat and not the best view, you'll fill it.

Great potential to get the people back into oakwell who can't currently afford it.

Also got Potential to become the singin corner, get the atmosphere going

    Limited standing

should have been brought back years ago - they still have it at Bundesliga. Personally it would be a significant factor for me - not on cost grounds (although I would be happy to pay less) but for the much better experience of standing. I went to Peterborough and thoroughly enjoyed standing as did my 2 lads, the only standing game they've been to.

We might lose money too because of it. First there is the cost of doing it, then, what if it doesn't attract new fans and the 1000 or whatever that do fill it are people who move from other parts of the ground. They pay less for their tickets, the club is worse off.

    Re: Limited standing

Firstly I'm fully aware it breaks ground regulations, but if you want to stand then choose selective areas in the Ponty End where many stand up anyway and the stewards are nice and relaxed about it. It happens at all grounds we cannot kid ourselves.

Reason we are located at the back is we hate being sat on our behind at games. You can't get a song going, have no room to wave or clap your hands to chants when one starts and it can be cold on your backside on November Tuesday rainy evening ha ha!

Although I stand up, I'm not that bothered about proper terracing returning. Why? We like to turn up at five to three, at best, well the game starts at 3pm, and we enjoy the fact we have our 'standing vantage point' reserved for us.

We will see at Peterborough again this year how good it all is - however there is still the sproradic distribution of the 'singing fans' which lessons the impact of being able to all sing together and make more noise. Maybe if there was standing at Oakwell we would all eventually find our comfort zones within the terracing, where those who want to be near singers are, and those who mutter under their breath about how bad the team are find their's or eventually move to East Stand Upper?
