Football fan based census shows that our rivals are of course the pigs from Swillsbro, but there are some less obvious ones on the list.....eg) PALACE/BRIGHTON, BOURNEMOUTH/READING. Worth a look just out of curiosity http://www.footballfanscensus.com/issueresults/Club_Rivalries_Uncovered_Results.pdf
Leeds - Manure. What a laugh, the deluded pr1cks still seriously see themselves as a big four club don't they.
Re: Club Rivalry uncovered - Reds v Wendies / Blunts Interesting. I wonder how long it would take for us to replace the both Sheffield clubs with others if they stayed in lower divisions than us for a long period. How many of us want that or would like them to come back up so that the rivalry is renewed? Me, I think I'd like em back, but struggling and us being dominant. Don't want em to come back if they're rebuild and progress past us though. I want it both ways me!
That is genuinely hilarious. Do Leeds really consider themselves to be in a rivalry with Man United? Oh do stop, sides are hurting now...
Growing up in the sixties & seventies, I remember our most passionate and fiercely fought derbies were against Bradford City. We didn't play either of the Sheffield clubs for donkey's years in a league fixture until the 1979/80 season.
Remember when i first started going down the well, Bradford were notoriously fierce rivals, often bringing a fair number hell bent on trouble. Looking down the census, i like what Brighton call Crystal Palace....."Crippled Alice"
The link you posted is a good read. For example, I detested Halifax Town in the early seventies as we always seemed to draw them in the cup and, despite usually seeing Barnsley produce the better football, we lost every time. How times have changed for both clubs in the intervening years.
Poles apart now. We ought to think ourselves lucky in which direction we've ended up when you look at it in that perspective.
A valid point. The opposite to Halifax Town in the '70's was York City. I don't think I've ever seen us lose there, even when Jim Iley was manager!!
I can't remember a bad result at York. Never forget when we won there in dense fog. Think we only saw half the game lol. There we go down nostalgia lane again!
I even saw Jimmy Hinch score there for us against one of his old clubs. A Hinch goal was a rare event indeed. Another former York player to score for us there was John Peachey. God, I can even bore myself!!
Peachey still looks the same as he did then....just a bit grey on top now though. Days of peachey and joicey eh, its them to blame for starting me off watching reds lol.
The usual line up when I was first started watching Barnsley was:- 1) Roy Ironside 2) Barry Murphy 3) David Booth 4) John Bettany 5) Eric Winstanley 6) Pat Howard 7) Bob Earnshaw 8) Johnny Evans 9) Jimmy Robson 10)Allen Bradbury 11)George Hamstead 12)Richard Hewitt. During that season (1968/69), Norman Dean was brought in for £10 000 to replace Allen Bradbury, Eddie Loyden for the same fee replaced Jimmy Robson and Brian Arblaster was promoted from the reserves to replace Roy Ironside.
(smiley face thingy) lol. I don't know how to put the emoticons on. Good idea you've given me Gordon, i'll just describe them in brackets!
Springett, chambers, spud murphy, john collins,John saunders, mick pickering, colin ****er, brian joicey, john peachey, Peter Price etc etc
Been impressed with your memory today some good facts from yesteryear, your not ready for the West Upper yet!
