Hasn't the new multi million pound market/cinema/restaurant complex just been approved? there's hope.....its just being able to keep the scrubbers out of it.

Hows it the councils fault that Barnsleys indigenous population are either geriatric, bariatric, or benefit claimatric? The council, amongst other things, have secured multi million pound funding to redevelop the secondary schools throughout the borough which in time will benefit the whole community and hopefully bring in much needed new blood and stop the decline. As for the Leader, he's fought the towns cause for over a decade and for me deserved to be candidate for Barnsle Central before the Labour Party scandalously 'parachuted' (pun intended) someone into the seat with little tangible link to the community.

I retired recently which means I now sometimes go into town/market. on a weekday to get some shopping. Jeez! It's like the 70's. I hear more foreign language than English, see lads of unemployed and what can only be described as unemployable Chavs hanging around. Actually, its nowt like the '70's. OK Barnsley was an unglamorous Northern mining town but it had a sense of purpose, community and hard working folk. Now it seems like a sink town. Yep the schools still produce bright kids who go to university/take up apprentice.ships but they dont come back when they graduate/qualify. So you are left with the long term unemployed who begat kids who become long term unemployed in a downward spiral. Fancy clocks, lack of any business community, museum conversions and fancy council offices wont cure that problem Mr Houghton

Why? The reference to foreigners (mainly Eastern bloc) is not racist but an observation. Most refugees, asylum seekers, immigrants from countries with a lower standard of living/wage tend to gravitate to areas generally regarded as having cheap housing/lower cost of living. That in turn, usually denotes that there is less demand for housing etc. as the area is considered less desirable. Barnsley seems, like many other struggling towns, to be all charity shops and 99p/£1 shops. If you are looking for quality/unusual items you usually have to resort to either the internet or an expedition out of town.

Does the fact that I've lived in the town all my life, but have Bachelor and Masters degrees, and hold down a pretty good job in the private sector (albeit not in Barnsley) exclude me from the above? In my experience, Barnsley is pretty similar to all the other towns that were overly reliant upon a single industry e.g. Rotherham. If Steve Houghton had managed to turn it all around then I wouldn't just have nominated him as our MP, I'd have asked him to be head of the IMF and the next Pope into the bargain!

Another of these threads. We do this topic to death every month, at least once.
The tarns ****, theres loadsa unemployed, unemployables, chavs, old folk, WAY more foreigners than ive ever known (theyre all in the bookies on the roulette wheels)
The amount of ppl ont sick (screwing the system) is a joke. The pubs are all closed in the villages yet the tarn centre has huggins of em!
The only buildings built have been council ones, or the bus station. The amount of derelict buildings and empty shops is unreal. The tarn centre has become a no-go zone for me unless I HAVE TO. Its full of undesirables - thieves, drunks and druggies - yet tha nivver sees bobbies moving em on. And why? Cos this government has cut the police and other vital services, all to make up for theirs, and the moneymens mistakes.
I havent a scooby doo, as to how or what needs doing to change it for the better. And I dont get paid to fix it, THEY do. But I pay higher taxes, for LESS services, and poor decision making...
1 good thing though, The New College. But as someone has already pointed out, the bright and talented young minds and entrepeneurs LEAVE our town. Sad state of affairs. But what do I know?
And funnily enough, Im off into tarn nar... for an appointment up summer lane. So I have to witness all the above again.
But, we arent alone. A lot of the north is very similar unfortunately..

 

Too many people to look down on now for those that think of themselves as better, thats why Barnsley is dead no togetherness just the same at Oakwell really.

This is my opinion in reply to none of the above.

 

mr houghton won't give a fook when he retires on his very healthy pension....... plus whatever he has syphoned away.

 

I better tell the missus that she's dragging the town down, what with her being a foreigner and all!
