Does anyone on here have any 'hands on' experience with Staffies?

I have heard that they are incredibly loving and loyal.
I want a dog to accompany me on my camping trips.
My Terrier/Whippet cross died 3 years ago and I really want a dog.
I am at home all day so can give the dog lots of love and attention.
I wouldn't mind a bit of love and attention in return from the dog either!
The Rescues and dog pounds are full of poor old Staffies.
I am not incredibly fit - worse so since I retired, so what kind of dog would be best for me?
I would really appreciate some advice.

Thanks Ponte, that's exactly what I have heard.
I've seen some lovely little Staffies but I have absolutely no experience whatsoever with that breed.
Other people tend to see them as dangerous dogs and I am worried by other people's attitudes to them.

I know what you mean but she was no bother at all. Kids in house too. She was quite playful most of her life.

Hi Tina My sister has had 3 staffs 1st one she got has a pup and the other 2 she got from the kennels and were older but she just wanted to give them homes, everyone throughout the years have been smashing dogs with a brilliant temperament and the poor little buggers did have a lot to put up with, children and now grandchildren, I think they are a lovely breed of dog

My brother had one for years. They are a good natured and loyal dog and certainly not in the dangerous dog category. I have found that they have a great temperament and are fairly placid with kids. The only vicious one i came across was one that had been rescued and had apparently been used for illegal fighting. Think this had left its mark and had gone a bit bonkers and probably beyond rehabilitation. Whenever i see one out and about with its owner, i never have any qualms about giving it a pat.

Great dog Tina. Take all the positivies from all the other posts. Yes they do fart, but methinks down to what you feed em. Be careful around other dogs though.

Hi Tina never had a staffie myself but have friends who have and they didn't have any problems with them. However have you considered a West Highland White Terrier, I have two and they're temperament is fantastic, just constantly want to please you and love to be cuddled.

They only need two short walks a day, don't cost a lot because being small dogs they don't take much feeding and best of all they don't shed so much less cleaning required.

great dogs tina, owned one for the last five years and without doubt they are one of the most loving and loyal breeds out there, they are fantastic with kids(my 2 are both under 10) and he's only gone for another dog after the other dog started being aggrressive towards my two kids in the park,be warned tho' feed a staff cheap snap and they fart like the devil,my dogs guffs were so bad it used make my eye's watter.

the rescue and dog pound is full of poor old staffies..message there or what

they are problematic love. I am semi retired now from my aeronautical days, and am one of the village posties in the sleepy hollow I am now in...the dogs we have the biggest trouble with is...yes its the poor old staffies, I am a firm believer in that there are very few bad dogs but very very bad owners..staffies are indeed okay and if trained and understood properly..but after being with a bad owner(and its mostly chavs) then they are unmanageable. Stay clear of a rescue Staffieas its most likely its come from such a background and you will have nightmares. But by all means take on a pup and mould it to your own lifestyle, you will not have a problem and will have fantastic dog.I say that because I also know at least three househoulds on my round who have Staffies and have brought them up correctly , the dogs are fabulous and great to be around, and some have more than one staffie.A great breed I reckon you may like is a Cairn Terrier..hardy, tough, a totally great character, and boundless energy, and yet very loving too. I have had one now for 3 years after having had corgi's all my life(still have 2 now) Cairns are a briliant breed. Another similar one is the Border terrier...fabulous little dog.

seems to be people have a lot of good experiences with them but our dog was attacked by one while being walked, pretty scary when they lock their jaws on and I really thought that was that. Luckily the owner (or perhaps worryingly seeing as it appeared an acquired skill) knew that effectively choking it by its collar was going to get it off and our dog was fine. Safe to say though there is or can be a bad side to them and I would never consider owning one.

its one of the few breeds that I consider should need to be licensed to own

Akita, Shar Pei, various mastiffs. I re-iterate what I say in my reply to Tina . No such thing generally as a bad dog...just bad owners. The Staffie/bull terrier breed is largely the vogue of the Chav/Ned culture and thus they are not correctly trained owned etc. They now have a bad name.I will give you a similie, whilst in the RAF I became as a secondary duty a Sub Aqua Diving supervisor, To cut a long stry short I was seconded a lot to al 3 services to assist or evn lead Diving expeditions around the world...not once did we have any real problems with the "horror story " marine creatures... and I do include Sharks there. Its all about respect and how you handle creatures. At the end of the day lets face it the deadliest, most unpredictable, most savage, most destructive creature is non other than ourselves..."Man The Wise"
