Unless you're desperate for it, I'd genuinely go for a 3GS and upgrade to iOS5. That's what I'm wanting to do.

be careful though cause the 3GS may come over a little slow with IO5. When Apple went from 3 to 4, my 3G became very slow to respond to actions.

I'm running IOS 5 now on my iPhone 4. Pretty impressed with it so far. The iMessage idea is cool and the notifications are a great improvement.

Hopefully have a 4 through work but if not that's what I'll probably do - I only really want it for the iPod and apps.

Isn't the iMessage and notifications exactly what Blackberry's have had for years?

Yeah, IMessage seems to be Apples attempt at BBM but you don't need any authorisation codes. Anyone who has IOS 5 and IMessage enabled communicate through that instead of SMS.

Never seen Blackberrys notification system. On IOS 5 the notifications pop up regardless where you are on your phone as a banner at the top of the screen. You want the guide I used to install it?

Nar mate, ta - be able to grab it from work no doubt. Don't own an iPhone, just been looking at upgrading next year so I'll see how it goes.

The Blackberry one doesn't pop up, only when selected. But the flashing light's configured to show you when summat's arrived.

What d'ya reckon to iOS5? Out of interest?

I have no clue to what has been written in any of the replies.

I remember when you could speak to people on phones.

Really like it mate. Does everything I need to. In terms of improvement from 4 it's not as major of an improvement as version 3 to 4 was but for me 4 to 5 is more of minor changes such as the notifications.

If anything the thing that frustrates me the most is the design of the 4! it doesn't really site comfortably in my hand compared to the 3 model but then the spec on the 4 is way better. For me if I was going to get an iPhone I'd hold out for the 5 where they seem to have both the design improvement and the hardware together. I'm ready for upgrade on my iPhone 4 in December so going to downgrade my contract to a lower tariff and hold out for the 5 which I'm pretty confident will be coming out next summer.

I'm still on a 3GS and downgraded my contract to a Simplicity (30 day rolling) about 6 months ago. Was waiting for the iPhone 5, but the 4S seems a bit 'is that it?' (not much different to the Galaxy S II). Don't really want to tie into another 24month contract when the 5 is more likely to be out in 12.

But early next year, Samsung are suppose to be releasing the Galaxy S III which is rumoured to have a 2GHz a Quad Core processor, 10mb Camera, 1080p at 60fps etc.. So even an iPhone 5 may be another catch up phone.

Will see what the O2 upgrade prices are like in next couple of hours - But at the moment it's looking like I'm gonna give this a miss.

Good move, I wouldn't bother either. Good thing about getting the new iPhone releases on version change is that you're ready for upgrade for the next model comes out...
