Hi All, Am just writing an article and wanted to mention the record shops that existed in Barnsley in the 80s and 90s. I know most of them, but can anyone answer the following: 1. What was the name of the record shop that backed onto the outside market just off May Day Green? 2. What year did Casa Disco close? 3. Was there ever a major chain record shop in the Alhambra, for some reason I think there might have been a Virgin... Cheers!
Woolworths used to have a large record section. Remember going in every Saturday to see what the top 20 was. There was also a record shop down from Casa Disco, used to have colour and picture vinyls on the right as you walked in. And wasn't there one up / under the YMCA or was that just a music shop I'm thinking of?
Casa Disco shut March 03, http://www.knowhere.co.uk/Barnsley/South-Yorkshire/Northern-England/info/recordshops
You got that one that used to be on the row of shops at the side of the outside market? Must have shut in about 90 or so. Can't remember what it was called.
Scene & Heard was down from Casa Disco. One outside market - Our Price? Next to or close to WH Smiths. EGS on Market Street. Neals in the Arcade, mainly sold hi-fi equipment (Bang & Olafson retailer) but also stocked some records. I think there was also one where Bramah's is or next door to that.
Some time around then. I remember getting my first digital camera Christimas 2002 or 3 and going for a walk around Barnsley to take some pics....have one of Casa Disco closed but still with posters in window.
There was an Andy's Records too up Market Street/Hill/can never remember which. That street that runs behind M & S
There were loads of places you could get records in the 80's. Besides the ones already mentioned, one of my favourites was Michael's records, which was upstairs in the Metropolitan Centre opposite Jack Fultons. There was a place in the little parade of shops at the back of the outdoor market for a while too, but I can't remember it's name. WH Smiths used to sell records, as did Boots. There was the stall in the corner of the upstairs market that was run by a lady, I think, called Mary. That was there for ages. The shop at the end of the bus station sold a few records for a while, as did GT News and the bike shop at the bottom of Dodworth Road. Of course, the Tuesday market had a few decent record stalls too, Dave's being the best for picking up decent bootlegs.
I remember buying records upstairs in Littlewoods also. 12" single Wonderland by Big Country I bought there because nowhere else had it, so that would be early 1984. I think they soon stopped after that as did Boots. As EastStander mentioned, I remember EGS also to the others mentioned. EGS also had a shop in the Ridings.
I can remember going to one upstairs in the Market, if you went up the stairs from mayday green and thru the doors I'm sure it was on the left hand side near where the littlewoods entrance was...was that Michaels records that Gordon mentioned?
Thanks everyone, it was Bradley's flying hour - well done. Eaststander if you still happen to have that photo, pretty please can I have a copy to use in the article (I'll give you full credit).
Yes, that's right. It used to have a big selection of singles for 50p and 12" singles for 99p. I got far more records from them that EGS or Casa Disco at the time.
