you must not get out much hemsy they've been shutting at an alarming rate for years look at lundwood hotel when you pass and priory,
What do people consider to be a reasonable price for a pint these days?? You can get a good drink in some pubs for £2 but I think up to £2.50 is fair. I realised how dear drinking had become when I ordered three John's in the (late) O'Dwyer's and it came to £8.90!
What would be interesting (and also very sad!)... I would like to see graphs of the price of a pint and the price of admission to Oakwell, on the same time scale. I think the argument about pubs closing is similar to the one about falling attendances - it's too expensive. Wouldn't have a clue where to find this information though.
Re: What would be interesting (and also very sad!)... Surely that's a challenge for Paul D. Has he posted lately?
But the anti alcohol brigade keep banging on about drink being too cheap apparantly we have more problems than ever due to binge drinking due to the low price of alcohol I must be drinking the wrong stuff - a pint of bitter in my local is approx £3:50 (lager pushing £4) and even an average bottle of wine in the supermarket is a fiver
For a decent pint I'd say up to £3. It would be nice to be able to go out with a mate and it cost a fiver at most for a round (so £2.50 each) but willing to pay more for quality. The binge drinking and cheap alcohol is the supoermarkets with 2 for £20 or whatever on cases of stella etc.
3 bottles of wine £10 in asda , and not bad wine either case of 20 cans of Carling/fosters/Smiths etc etc £10 - £12. thats why they are saying its cheap Dave, and also I think thats why people are just refusing to pay for drink at pub prices. think of £2:5o for a pint..you will most likely get 5 cans of the same ale in ASDA/Tesco etc, this is why the pubs are going under. Folk will have a BBQ and friends family round rather than get a mortgage on a drink session at the pub.
Re: 3 bottles of wine £10 in asda , and not bad wine either On the subject of binge drinking - I'm going to the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway beer fest on Friday....doubt it'll be cheap though as entry tickets/day rider on the train costs £19, b&b to pay for etc.
Re: 3 bottles of wine £10 in asda , and not bad wine either I think the culture around drinking has changed too, lots of people want to have a nice meal and a drink or take the kids to fun pubs or find a good atmosphere to watch sports. which is just a telly in the taproom in most pubs. plus theres lots more variety on offer on weekends and evenings nowadays and money doesn't spread too far these days. i remeber not too long ago when 11.o'clock was the closing time. most days of the week something was going off in pubs and clubs, turns, bingo, snooker pool and darts matches panel games fishing club meetings etc.is it better now i wonder?
It's just too expensive to go to the pub these days, no surprise they are going out of business, no fecker can afford a night out anymore.
True. I don't mind paying around £2.00 for a pint but any more than that and I feel ripped off and don't want to pay. When you consider I bought two crates of good lager (Carlsberg and San Miguel) from Morrison’s for £15 recently and then work out what the same would cost in a pub you can see where the problem is.
