Tory voters and their MPs were the only ones who want a referendum - or that's what it would appear from last night's vote.

Around 90 Tory MPs have risked their careers by listening to their constituents' opinions (as well as their own) and ran the gauntlet of a three line whip to vote with their conscience.

How many Labour MPs have done that I ask? Names on a pinhead will do.

Could it be that Tory voters (and their MP's) are usually the ones afraid of Johnny Foreigner and are usually Little Englanders? Especially the farmers. Who benefit from Europe like no one else does.

    Just asking like.

For the record, I think we should come out of Europe as it is unelected and unaccountable in its present guise.

I heard on the news that 19 Labour MPs had voted for a referendum including Denis Skinner.
Those voting for were content knowing their vote wouldn't actually trigger a referendum and a vote of confidence against the Government.

    haven't you just

    nullified your own argument there?

Unless you are saying Labour voters have sound reasons for wanting out, while Tory voters haven't.

    Re: haven't you just

The first part of my reply related to your question as to how many Labour MPs had voted for a referendum.

The second part was that it was a safe vote to be against the government since all the main parties were asking their MPs to vote against it. There was on paper at least, a big inbuilt majority to cushion the effect that 100+ MPs from the governing party defying the party whip were going to have on the outcome.

Lots of reasons to be in or out. But not the time to be doing a bunk with all the financial chaos around.

From memory both Tory and Labour MPs were split at the time of the first referendum on Europe and I cant see as anything as changed.

    Sorry Kestyke

My remark wasn't intended for you. It was in response to another. This seems to be the problem with Linear mode. If you look in Threaded you will see how it tracks back.

    Thanks!
I always wondered what the quote option was about, I thought it was so you could pull apart somebody's original post.
Don't you end up with massive messages on a long thread if everyone uses "Reply with Quote"?

They might well be but the Euro Parliament is pointless, the un-elected Commissioners have the power and theere is no political control over the ECB
