Just had a look back to see how much and how quickly the rose, but its a bit of a myth if you ask me. Yes the odd derby/big game was pretty well attended, as - of course - were the last 2 home games. But the gates moved between 7 and 11 thousand in the main. It was the Prem season where - obviously - we packed it every time. I dunno the point Im making tbh, or why I bothered, but I found it interesting. Can anyone tell me how much the NMW was back then? And how much were ST, and pay on the gate prices? Cant remember how much my ST was but I was in the East Upper back then and Im sure it was about 200 quid (I was 14 year old btw). I was at school, so no idea the cost of living or NMW. Just would be nice if someone could find out the above things, and maybe unemployment figures etc. So then we could compare that era, to this. Would be interesting I reckon. The average gate was just over 11 thou, so not much difference to the last few years. And it was lower for years before that. So are we really that p*ss-poor all of a sudden in supporting our club? Or are we as I believe, the same? Thanks for your time and if anyone could help regarding the figures etc, it would be appreciated. Link is for any of you wanting to see the gates of that particularly amazing season. Brought back memories just reading it tbh. Like the fact that in the 3-1 win over Hudds at Oakwell, Im sure their goal was a Tom Cowan (ex blunt) throw-in that went in unaided..? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996-97_Barnsley_F.C._season
ST was definitely around 200 quid a pop that season. I have a feeling pay on the gate for the Ponty was either 14 or 16 but I might be miles out - paid on gate for first half of season the got a half season ticket at Christmas. I would hope that we will shift a few of those this year if we're top ten come the end of December.
R old boy got me a ST obviously, but he paid on the gate due to work etc. But he cant remember the prices, only guessing that he paid about £11.50 and kids was about £6.50.. so theres a bit of disparity in mine (dads) and your guesses..
there was no NMW back then whitey,,,however the difference these days is that the general cost of living takes up much more of everyones income,,,,,ie.there int as much 'disposable' income kicking around,,and to be totally honest i dont think the attendences would be much higher if it were £15 a game,,certainly not enough to make up the lost revenue as apposed to £25-£30 a game
sorry mate I can't remember the price although I think it was about £10 for ES upper. I had a season ticket. I do know that when the ES opened in 1992 (20 year next year... YIKES ! ) it was £5 a seat in the ES upper.
Think mine was 200 for the Premiership season - been going for 20 years before that but that season was my first season ticket. Had one ever since
http://www.homesoffootball.co.uk/collection/search/barnsley/1/1841 So in 1995 it was £8 to get in to a game. . . . .
I don't know, I wasn't born! I just find it interesting that in the last 15(ish) years, the cost of going to watch Barnsley (same league, same seats, worse team) has more than trebled. . . Has everything else in life?
every clubs prices have increased at about the same rate. the same with replica shirts. no-one agrees with the prices but we still pay it, if we didnt then the club would fold then we would be moaning that we had no club to fork out for!
Re: You're miles out mate the cost of an adult ticket was £14 and £7.50 for concessions. our ticket prices didnt change from 1999-2003 and they arent much different to any of the other clubs in our league. all this moaning about ticket prices is getting nearly as boring as that pilchard 'thereeeeeeeev'
I appreciate its a general football problem of price increasing at an alarming rate. My question was more of a general "is everything else in life increasing at this rate" question. Like in 1995, was the cost of going to the cinema £2.50, was a pint £1? I'm asking genuinely, I was too young to remember. . . . To be honest I don't really pay the prices much anymore. I'd be devestated if Barnsley were to fold, but I have more important things to spend money on . . .
Got a few 96/97 programmes in front of me Unfortunately they don't publish match ticket prices for home league games, but in the Tranmere programme they're advertising 11 match (half) season tickets for £80 in The Ponty and £95 in the East upper tier. Away matches at the likes of Man City, Portsmouth and Sheff Utd are all £10.
Re: You're miles out mate I started the thread out of boredom. Nowhere in this thread did I use it as a vehicle to attack the clubs ridiculous prices... until then, obviously. I just wanted to see what the gates were like at the same stage of the season we are at now, in 96-97. And yes, I did think it would be interesting to compare prices etc. Not in a "trebled in 15 years" way. Thats why I asked for the NMW back then. Cost of living, price of a pint, energy, unemployment levels, house prices etc etc and so on. It would all help in forming a greater understanding. But I suppose we all know the reasons for such ludicrous increases in the price of EVERYTHING. Because these companies etc, get away with it, and we the public, dont do enough to just say F U C K OFF.. Say for instance, the club put 50 quid on ST next year, we would still pay it. We would moan, but enough would buy em to keep the club in business. If they made all fixtures a flat rate of £30 next year, enough would still turn up. Because despite the loss of around 1800 home fans, 1500 were ST holders this summer. So despite the obscene matchday prices, the payers-on-the-dayers figure has held up.. And finally, if British Gas (or any other energy company) put bills up by 20% (again) next week, you would all pay... Yes the wages etc have hurt football, but its not purely that. Our players arent on wages that warrant 30 quid tickets. And if in fact they are, then sumats FUBAR
Re: Got a few 96/97 programmes in front of me Were prices the same in every stand or cheaper in the ponty that year?
