Was in town last weekend to find the old Ice Interiors store has now become one of those cash convertor type places.(between old number 7 pub and Joseph Brammahs)

Yet another blott on the landscape.I thought the council was determind to improve the image of the town centre.Well if any of its councillers care to walk through town they will find an abundance of stores like this or poundland type shops or boarded up buildings.

    Keep up the good work.

Times are hard and friends are few.

What can the council do? And even if they could put a stop to who rents/buys a shop in town would they just leave all these shops empty and wait for Harrods? I don't think so.

Beats a pound shop. Unfortunately those kind of shops are big business in towns that high unemployment and so forth .
Still it is bringing some jobs into the town centre which is a boost. Albeit only a small one.
The council can offer as many incentives as they can but honestly do you think many major retail outlets would see a move to barnsley as a profitable risk?

It's very poor in the town these days and all it does is ensure that money spent is spent a few miles down the road at Meadowhall. It's a shame because I'd love to buy everything local but sadly I have no choice a lot of the time.

Don't forget the Lidl that's going to be built near Town End roundabout, welcome to Barnsley!

Seem to be taking their time over that though, knocked the Co-op down ages ago.

Good news for Wombwell though, there is nowhere to put Santa's Grotto this year are there are no vacant shops on the High Street.

It's a combination of Meadowhall/Barnsley Council's car parking charges/years of pursuing a quick buck in terms of 'bars' - mate of mine owned 'Mr wayne' clothes shop, a long time ago he said that all BMBC were interested in was filling the town with such bars as they made more money out of them, The Alhambra Centre - **** hole that took away a lot of the character of the town. And the general economic climate, although plenty of other towns have been quite enlightened in how they've treated town centre shops and businesses in terms of rent/rates etc - a lot is out of their control but more imaginative councils don't keep ripping the heart out of their towns with 'redevelopement' and link roads.

Was a good shop Mr Waynes, used to go in often to buy stuff. Thinking about it, it was the last Barnsley shop I ever bought clothes in. Since it shut I now go to Leeds.
Still got a MW belt at home.

Should try living in Huddersfield where we now have nearly half a dozen pound shops including three on the same street......

Times change and Town Centres have always been dynamic places. Barnsley is no different to many Towns in the North, in fact is a darn sight better than some I visit.

I don't think you can blame the council's parking charges. Try Leeds or Sheffield City Centres.

Meadowhell if free parking, but the shops are more expensive than Barnsley and you do get a bigger range of stores.

Compare Barnsley with like for like not with Cities.

The Alhambra certainly isn't a **** hole. It's always clean and tidy.

For a Town of it's size Barnsley has a good shopping centre.

Sorry DBK3000, they won't have that on here

Barnsley is **** end of, The empty shops on Kendray street are nothing to do with the fact they're only up for short-term let because of the impending redevelopment. Some on here (who are no doubt our Dave's disciples) must never visit other city/town centres. its the same mentality as those that moan that Barnsley fans boo for nothing and are the worst fans in the country. No other fans boo or moan? FFS

Wish they'd **** off and live somewhere else.

Shop wise the town centre looks tired and run down. Only really HMV, GAME, Boots, Burtons and M & S etc that keep its head above water. However, at least the town centre seems safe enough. Yes you've got your token gesture chavs and drunks, but never do I feel wary of walking anywhere, even in the evening. This is NOT the case in other towns and cities. The Market development may help matters.

On another note, Barnsley night life is great in my opinion. All together, all cheap enough, mostly busy (Saturday), relatively safe. Many other cities may have bigger and classier clubs, but they're a tenner in and 2 miles apart!!!

For a night out it's better than Rotherham but not as good as Doncaster and Sheffield, it's a bit **** and provincial to be honest or maybe I'm getting old.
