I think that towels have been banned now. I am sure they mentioned it on MOTD last week when they were discussing the towels that Stoke are having stitched into their shirts.

And he will be dealt with for those offences. The referee had no choice other than sending the keeper off for what he did, I can't even see how this is in question. Had it not been for his team mates he would probably have attacked the referee too. He was completely out of control.

And a coward too. Booting somebody while they are down is a no no in any circumstances.

No they weren't, the last one was Sheridan, he got a 2nd yellow for complaining to the ref about the punch that Paul Ince had thrown which the ref ignored.

imho if a fan comes on the field and attacks you

then you should be allowed to kill them with no repercussions.

It's ridiculous that this 'keeper was sent off. From now on all you've got to do when your team is losing is enter the field of play and start laying in to one of the opposition players. They'll hit you back, get sent off and your team has a much better chance of winning. Which clearly is absurd.

I don't care that the 'keeper in this clip kicked the bloke when he was on the floor, in my opinion he should have been stamping on his head. And then be awarded with a medal of valour.

The guy who ran on the pitch is the lovely person here. End of story.

My Dad turned to me at the time and said he'd just seen Shez lump Ince. I thought it was a straight red too?

    No he didn't

Sheridan got sent off for punching Ince. Only red card that was right. The controversy in that call was that Ince should have been red carded too for retaliating.

Not end of story at all, hence the different opinions in this thread and why he was sent off, and rightly so.

Having watched it twice and thought about it...

I have to side with the keeper. If someone runs at you and aims a karate kick, I think anyone in the world would retaliate.

I understand the referee may have had to send him off by 'the letter of the law' but it's a daft law if it applies to intruders onto the field of play as well as players.

If that happened in the street, the fan would be the one in trouble for starting the violence... two kicks from the keeper would be unlikely to result in any prosecution as I doubt the fan suffered any noticeable injury.

Correct, he hit him when it should have beenthe other one that hid behind Ince. Shez just turned and hit first one he saw.

Re: imho if a fan comes on the field and attacks you

I agree with you entirely. The 'man' who ran onto the pitch and attempted to assault the keeper got exactly what he deserved. In my opinion the keeper reacted just as anyone would who had just been the victim of an unprovoked attack.

However I also feel that he had to be sent off and the referee did exactly the right thing. If the ref had allowed him to stay on then he would have been in a lot of trouble because he had just completely ignored one of the games major rules and you simply can't do that.
I think that rule or something similar needs to be brought in sharpish to stop exactly the situation that you describe where supporters are trying to get players sent off.

Disagree. If someone aimed a kick at my head then I'd make sure they knew about it whether they fell over trying to attack me or not. That's their problem not mine.

Attacking someone while they are on the floor is just as bad as attacking someone while they are standing. both are wrong. Retaliating to being attacked while the attacker lays on the floor is no better or worse than if they werent a pillock who fell over.

Re: Having watched it twice and thought about it...

If that happens in the street then yes, the initial attacker would be in trouble, but if you continued laying in to him whilst he's laid on the floor then you would be as well.
Anyway, the red card has been rescinded

That the red card has been rescinded says it all. He only kicked him twice when he was on the floor. If he hadn't he could very well have got back up and tried to attack the keeper again before the slow stewards got there.
