After reading the Keith Hill article in this mornings Yorkshire Post it is obvious that Pat Cryne cannot sustain us in the Championship.
Pat Cryne has shown that he is a football man (or he is getting excellent advice from someone in football) by his appointments of generally good managers - Ritchie, Davey and Robins all added to the clubs success by getting promotion to the Championship or by keeping us in the Championship.
Pat Crynes latest appointment as manager is, I would say, even better, much better than the previous managers he has appointed.

However. Our crowd attendance figures have suffered over the last few seasons because we have been stuck in the same position just above the relegation spot.
The town of Barnsley is suffering more than most due to the poor economy of the country. This is also causing attendances at Oakwell to go down.
The club has therefore to rely on the goodwill of the owner/s to keep the club going.

We have now the best management team at the club in decades. But is it fair to appoint such talent and then not give them the financial backing to be successful? I dont think it is.

After reading the Yorkshire Post article I think we should just accept that the current owner isn't wealthy enough to keep Barnsley in the Championship so consequently we should bite the bullet and accept League 1 football untill other owners can be found.
Otherwise Hillflicker will be flogging a dead horse.

To be honest I don't want to accept league one if we end up there then so be it, I do believe we can become an established championship side, every year most people have us down for certain relegation and up to press we keep proving people wrong and I can't see why we can't keep bucking the trend.

never fear forumites...thereev has a fledging business about to go live in 2012....so give it a year or so and thereev will indeed be buying the club......giving whitey a job of some sort and banning all but a selected few forumites from the ground.

hope this helps dispel any fears

Why would an owner, current ones included, put millions of their own money into a bottomless pit that they will never get back, nor get much appreciation for?

Who, other than someone local who is minted and loves the club (that is a very small list I'm sure) would suddenly come along on a white horse to give millions to match the championship fritterers that perpetuate the lunacy of transfer fees and players wages?

There are so many shady owners in football who have scant regard for football and are doing it for an ego trip or for other ulterior motives besides the good of the club. Do we want to be in Bolton's position? Over £100m in debt and no way of servicing it? Or Portsmouth maybe? Or Blackburn perhaps? Birmingham with owners on money laundering charges? Or Coventry, and the list goes on.

Football clubs have to live within their means, or ultimately they will cease to exist. HMRC are challenging rules and have had enough of providing soft funding when clubs keep spending vast amounts on players.

Also, with the possible advent of FIFA rules dictating spend, any investment or loans won't be allowed if they exceed financial parameters (% of revenue probably).

Spending millions on players doesn't guarantee success (leiester is the prime example). If we can develop a good youth conveyor belt, look for the up and coming talent and take some chances on people, if we can pick up the odd seasoned pro dropping down the ladder with good know how, thats how we'll survive and do better than survive.

I'm proud that Barnsley are doing the right things and aren't putting the club in danger for future generations.

Why, when we are in the Championship and have been for a number of seasons, should we accept League 1 football? Particularly when we are mid table. I bet there's a few other clubs in the same situation as ourselves.
If we say we are just going to accept L1 football then we might as well just pack up completely. I go to watch Barnsley more in hope than expectation, but the hope is that we can challenge for a play off spot, that there's always the chance of a season like 96-97 again and another tilt at the Premier LEague, I'm not saying that HAS to happen, but that is what most of us are looking at and dreaming of. If we just say, "sod it, League 1 it is", then expect more people to stop going because I doubt I'll continue to fork out £400 a year with nothing to aim for,

    What a load of tosh

Football's always been about the little club performing against all expectations, the Roy of the Rovers stuff. Our attandences now are no worse than when we gained promotion in 96/97 - I bet they're even higher.

What's happened is that Cryne's decided that we have to be self financing ahead of the League ruling which I think comes in next season. Team's like Leeds, Pompey, Leicester etc despite their larger attendances are not in as good a position as us, in the fact if they don't get promoted this season, they're bolloxed. We're only spending what we earn which is what it used to be like prior to these sugar daddies infiltrating the game. The size of the town, attendance etc is totally irrelevant otherwise the Pigs, Leeds, Huddersfield and Derby would be in the Premier League and Wigan, Blackburn etc would be in the 3rd Division.

Once the fairy-tale stuff ceases to be achievable then football will die.

Do you reckon our gate receipts overall will have gone down on last season taking into consideration the hike in admission prices? I reckon they will be similar even with around a 1000-1500 drop in the average attendance. A big pay day from the Leeds fans and another one to come from West Ham.

    Garbage man.

Like they said at the start of the season, they intend to live within their means this year. Despite Hill's constant bairning about people being 'unrealistic' about budgets (which from what I can see is equally garbage - NO-ONE is putting any pressure on him to spend what we don't have), you have to assume he's working to that plan, otherwise Cryne would surely have sent him the same way as Robins.

So how on earth do you reach the conclusion that living within our means will lead to league 1 football? In case you've missed it, the league table is here, and shows that we're ahead of a number of clubs who I doubt are quite so prudent:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_1/table/default.stm

I expect Barnsley to continue doing what it has always done, and continue to out-perform clubs with bigger budgets.

Try as I might, I can't see what all the fuss is about this article and the "news" that we've two bob and some buttons to spend on players. No schitt Sherlock! I'm more than happy the way the club is run, owned, financed, whatever.... When the bomb drops on all these clubs digging themselves further and further into debt, if we're left safe and sound in the shelter created by the prudence of the club, then bring it on. Current business model of football clubs just cannot be sustained. I think those in charge of the purse-strings at Oakwell have got this one absolutely spot on.

I completely agree and I think Hill knows that we will be in a stronger position than a lot of other clubs in the not too distant future because of the way the club is being run.

You've made a very good point there. There's some real braindead people use this message board (amongst the sensible ones of course!) and I don't think even they have been calling for big name signings. We all seem to know the score so I have no idea who Hill keeps referring to when he says things like that.

If we are now operating in the black

My only wish is that we had done it sooner. I'm extremely grateful to Patrick Cryne for taking the club on, but I never wanted his money to finance the operational costs of the football club. I've always wanted the club to stand on its own two feet and I've always believed we can sustain our championship status by doing that.

I do not want and have never wanted a sugar daddy.

I don't think we should just say 'sod it' but there's a £2 -3m black hole per season that is currently being plugged by Mr Cryne.
