First off, apologies for calling you old! haha

Since the redevelopment of Oakwell and the other grounds i've always wondered what it was like when Oakwell was all standing. Was there a better atmosphere when everyone was standing at football grounds or was it the same? Do you prefere all-standing or all seater stadia?

Standing was better, but facilities are better, ie toilets.
Used to be a lot more then too though.

I would prefer standing but have the option of seating also. Oakwell generated a fantastic atmosphere when you could stand. You also had the luxury of mixing and moving around the ground with your pals if you wanted to. I'm all for bringing back safe standing areas, i hope one day it becomes a reality again but somehow i doubt it will happen.

Good video, pretty much explains it. I've always thought that i would have enjoyed football matches more if everyone was standing

Me too. Like i said i've always thought that i would have preferred the terrace days of standing and the camaraderie of it all. Seems like grounds had loads more character back in the day, which is why i love oakwell- still keeps it's individuality.

Just wondered what everyone's thoughts were on this

Let's take those rose - tinted glasses off for a while. During the strike and after - for obvious reasons - the atmosphere was awful. I remember the last game of one season in the mid 80's when there was barely 3,000 in the crowd v Wimbledon. It took a long time to recover from that. Situation is similar to now , lots of people losing their jobs or money is short and football is the first thing to go.
It is difficult to beat the atmosphere v Man City when 33,000+ were jammed into the ground but a full seated ground lik,e the ones in the premiership and v Chelsea in the cup have come pretty close.

It was good - when it was good but it was also bad when it was bad if you get me.

I will indeed, I'll translate for you, what with your fading memory, failing eyesight etc.

Would love to see that again. Seeing Oakwell full, or nearly full like against Chelsea, is amazing

    Put it this way

If you wanted a barrier to lean on, you had to be there by 2, and more than likely at 3.05pm some 6'5" **** would come and stand 6" in front of you. Yes you could move, but you would lose the barrier that you'd bagged an hour ago and then you'd be stood in front of someone else gobbing in your parka hood. if you were under 6' you either had to stand near the front, take a beer crate or stand in some bleak corner of the ground with a north easterly whipping the coal dust up in your face. Granted you could stand where you wanted in the ground and the atmosphere was probably better, but there's a lot to be said for turning up at 2.50pm knowing you have an uninterrupted view of the game waiting for you.

As a youngster I preferred to stand. Loved being able to move about, choose your barrier etc... And the atmosphere at Oakwell in those days was undoubtedly better.
But ... I had several very scary moments at games, and to be honest wouldn't want to go back to that.
Stoke away in the cup, where we took about 8,000 fans. I started off at the back of the terrace, ended up at the front, crushed against the fence.
Remember being so crammed in vs Man City in the lg cup, and Bradford away in the Facup that you could barely breathe,
    let alone see.
I realise safe standing is going to be totally different to that, but it's not for me. Retrograde step in my opinion.

    Re: Put it this way

Good point. I'm 6"1 so i suppose i might have got away with it sometimes but would be a pain to stand there for an hour just to save a space to lean on
