Hammill left for next to nowt because we didn't offer him an improved contract early enough when all the signs were there of him being worth more than the pathetically low clause.

Howard left because we never actually offered him a new contract (according to the club at the time), we talked him up as being worth £10m and then failed to offer a contract that reflected this.

vaz te left for next to nowt because we failed to offer an improved contract when again all the signs were there.

Butterfield looks likely to walk for nothing in the summer because we failed to offer him a new contract when all the signs were there.

Is somebody at the club completely failing to do their job properly?

so your insinuating all these players would have stopped at barnsley if we'd have offered them the right contract choose who came calling?

No, they all left because BFC could never ever compete with the salaries that other clubs were willing to offer them. Contracts are worth diddly squat if the right offer comes along. That's the reality of the football world we live in.
Can't blame people taking a "promotion" when it's offered to them. It's a short career.
What is wrong is clubs like Leicester, Portsmouth, Cardiff, living beyond their means.
What's right, it clubs like ours doing their best to live within their means, and still making a decent fist of it.

If we had reacted to Hammills performances by offering a new contract which removed the clause then he would not have left for next to nowt.
If we had offered Butterfield a contract in the summer then we wouldnt be sat here waiting for him to decide if he's walking out for nowt or not.
If we had offered vaz te a new contract before other teams came sniffing he may well have signed and we wouldnt have lost him for next to nowt.
If we had offered Howard ANY contract then perhaps he wouldnt have left for next to nowt when we suddenly found he'd be out of contract in just a few months.

I didn't say that they would have stayed regardless, what I said is that they all left for peanuts because we didn't tie them down to longer deals earlier.

Butterfield wouldn't be able to take a promotion in the summer if he had signed a 3 year deal with us last summer. Hammill wouldnt have been able to walk for £500k if he had signed an improved deal to remove the clause. Vaz Te wouldnt have held all the cards last week if we had tied him down to a longer deal in november. Howard wouldnt have been a free agent months later if we had signed him to a new contract.

What i'm getting at is that we can't stop players leaving when their contract expires but why aren't we being proactive and getting the contracts extended earlier rather than waiting for other clubs to come sniffing and then trying (pathetically) to get them to sign a new contract when better ones are on the table?

We should be realising when our players are worth keeping and offering a contract then when there is only ours on the table, it is crazy to sit and wait until a bigger team offers them one and then try to compete without actually trying to compete.

If we had offered Vaz Te a contract in november then more than likely he would have had only one contract offer which was from BFC. By waiting until the transfer window to offer him one he had plenty of other interested clubs with contracts that as you say we couldn't compete with.

We can't compete on wages with other clubs which is why, in my opinion, we have to be smarter and tie our players down before the other offers come in. Afterall they see our players when they send a scout, we see them every day of the week, isn't it logical that WE should be realising how good they are before other people? If you agree that it is logical then you must also agree that it is illogical that we are offering contracts AFTER other clubs come sniffing.
Butterfield last month = Offers from bigger clubs on bigger wages

no way on earth can we (nor should we) compete with other alleged bigger clubs we've been down that road and almost lost our club. but the players people have mentioned havn't exactly set the leagues on fire truth is they did alright with us but were never irreplaceable and have achieved nothing since leaving.
chris shuker tried to hold us to ransom he was a decent player with us a couple of seasons. the club got shut and proved to be right and i think they've been right with most contracts. we'r still in championship not paying big wages for mediocre players.

    'All the signs'

All performed for 3/4 months. Brian Howard is the only one that I think we really messed up with.

It's chicken and egg - do we lumber ourselves with 4 years of an improved contract and risk loss of form/injury? Fine line.

We do need some better management at the top, though. How many businesses with a multi million turnover have an owner that leaves the running to anything other than a Chief Exec? Spending 200k a year would be the best investment Paddy could make.

Whilst I get where you're coming from, the players hold all the cards. You can't force Vaz Te to sign. Take it at face value, we got him for nowt, offered him peanuts, gave him a chance, which was a gamble. He returned us with goals. He's then offered ridiculous money, which he's never going to get with us, ... what does he do?? He takes the cash, like most of us would. It's the way it is. From the outside, that is an astute bit of business... buying a player no-one else can be arsed with, and selling him on 6 months later for (what I have heard) to be £750K.

Ideally you would tie players down, but that in itself is a gamble. Lets say we offered Jacob a contract in November, that's triple what he's on now, and then he gets injured ...... like he has. No-one knows when he's back or whether he'll be as good when he's back. Money just down the drain....
Fact is we're skint, we can't compete. I'd rather us do what we are doing than stretch ourselves and end up in admin.

Love how we try to take the moral high ground by claiming we live within our means

When a quick look at any of the accounts filed at companies house since we came out of administration shows we've constantly filed terrific losses, to the tune of millions, and are forever being bailed out by a sugar daddy. We consistently live well beyond our means. We're exactly the same as many clubs. Significantly worse than others.

Then, half way through the one season where we are finally attempt to pull in the reigns and only spend what we've got and we're suddenly the paradigms of virtue.

    Makes me laugh.

Ridsdale is an experienced Football Executive but....

Wouldn't want anyone like him near the club again. Not sure what the answer is as I could not name someone to do this. In US Sport each team has General Manager who overseas team and business affairs for the owner and they are actively recruited by other teams (Red Sox just lost theirs to the Chicago Cubs) - not sure if we have the same over here or how you would pick one

A new first for the BBS

I can't recall any post on here ever using the word 'paradigm' before. Well done, sir.
I agree with you, as well.

Er, I'll have you know I used it once. I asked if anyone knew what paradigm meant.

Re: Ridsdale is an experienced Football Executive but....

During our Premiership year the top boys were on £8K per week.

I doubt we've had anyone - even in good times - on more than £10K per week since. Average now will be much, much lower.

I reckon Hammill will have been offered £15-20K pw to go to Wolves. So it might as well be in another Universe.

Now where we did go wrong - BIG TIME - is when we dropped out of the Prem. Danny was on £150K a year - A YEAR, MARK YOU. He wanted £170K to stay. We declined. Very, very expensive decision that, in my view. Those figures are from a man who knows.

You can say what you want, but it was clear that he knew what he was doing from a transfer dealing perspective. It's just that he continually had a burning in his pocket!

I just don't see what business experience Barry Taylor and Don Rowing bring to the table. Don's apparently a top class secretary. Let him do that. Let's pay someone, a proper businessman with experience negotiating contracts and deals to do it for us. It'd save us plenty.

Agree with what you are saying

But I am not sure where we will find this person. Often seems that football clubs are run on their own rules. Definitely think that we need someone to be a General Manager
