    Re: Winter tyres!!!!

I'd love to own a set but £300 a set for something that might get a few weeks use a year at best seems a bit uneconomical to me. If everyone had them I'd get some but it seems a bit pointless when i'll only get stuck anyway because the car in front doesnt have them.

    Re: Winter tyres!!!!

They actually cost approximately £0 (in my opinion).

Well, obviously not really - at some point you have to fork out for them. However, once you've got a set of wheels with winter tyres, you swap them at the end of November and swap them back in April. In the winter, you're not wearing out your summer tyres, so they last longer, and vice versa. In the long term, each set lasts just as many miles as it would normally, so the total cost of your tyres is the same as normal.

There are 2 flaws in my argument however - winter tyres are softer, so wear more quickly if there is no snow. The other flaw is that if you don't keep your car long enough, you may not get the benefit of sharing out the wear.

In Germany when you buy a second hand car, you often get a set of winter wheels with it, so you sell yours with your old car.

Reading this thread with interest from a snowy Alpine resort. I first fitted snow tyres a few years ago when driving to Austria and now fit them every winter. The difference is amazing you just drive round almost normally as long as everyone else has them Missed the snow back home but today drove down a snow covered steep mountain road at -17C parked for a bit to unload.car then turned round and drove back up it without any problems This is on a set that has done nearly 20000 miles as well. personally I think we should ban cars without winter tyres from the roads if snow is forecast. They also work a lot better on Icy roads

Surely the big initial outlay is for the extra set of wheels

Particularly if you've got fancy alloys.

That is money you can't factor in to wear and tear.

It would cost us well over a grand to equip ourselves with winter tyres and wheels. That's a lot of money and when a winter only produces one day of snow, like this year, it's very hard to justify.

So where are we all supposed to find £400+ every year?

Because they won't last long driving round on tarmac. Besides which temperatures of 5 degrees can happen in June.

The tyres are not the problem, its idiot drivers who generally fall into one of these 2 catagories

    1. carry on driving as if its a fine summers day, oe 70 or 80mph on the motorway.
    2. crawl about at 1mph when its perfectly safe to do up to 30mph.

    Education is required.

I had my last set for 4 seasons, and they were still fine when I sold the car.

    Re: Winter tyres!!!!

I agree with you absolutely that they will very often pay for themselves. Especially if they prevent you from sliding into the back of another car or into the central reservation whilst overtaking. What is the usual excess on a UK policy now, around 150 quid? Add that to the 10% increase in your premiums after you have an at-fault accident even if you do have protected NCD, if you don't then your insurance doubles. Plus loss of value of your car from it having been involved in an accident. For 300 quid I think there's no reason not to.

Jay - as for your point that if you've got fancy alloys then you need to fork out for another set of wheels, this is correct as winter tyres don't function if they're on very large wheels relative to the tyre size (ie 17" + alloys on a Ford Focus). But I would argue that if you're driving the sort of high-spec car which tends to have such wheels then you're quite likely to be able to find a grand for another set without too much bother. However, if you've got a standard set of wheels, you can just change the tyres over. It is also my opinion that you should get a reduction in your insurance premium for fitting them.

Show's the failings in how we teach people to drive.

They know how to operate a car, that's it.

Did you have them on a different set of wheels?

If so how much did they cost?

If not how much did it cost to get them swapped over twice a year?

roadside executions is whats called for, that would pull people into line especially the w@nkers that dont indicate ( therefore making me brake for no reason, losing momentum, and having to zip through 20 + gears when i was a hairy ar5ed distance driver) and those total waste of skin bags 'o' 5hite that sit in the middle lane of the motorway. it should be pull over, any last messages............. no, ok your car will be sold to help pay for your funeral..... BANG, corpes hung up at side of road to show a zero tolerance approach

Try driving over Saddleworth moor in the winter, that's a experience that I'll never forget.:nails:

Re: Did you have them on a different set of wheels?

I paid 360 quid for a top of the range set of Finnish spiked tyres (though a similar set for a Nissan Qashqai would now set me back around 500, but my missus's company had a lot of dealings with Nokian Tyres at the time so we got a healthy discount). Getting them swapped over is 50 quid a pop, and storage another 40 per season if you don't have a garage. I had my previous and current set on the same set of wheels. Most people do, though a couple of my very rich clients swap their whole set of wheels over owing to the fact that they have very large alloys, on which winter tyres do not function well. One set of new wheels plus tyres for a Lexus RS comes in at nearly three grand, for Porche Cayenne comes in at five grand. But then if you're driving that type of motor, I'm sure that you can afford a new set of wheels no bother!

    2 options there Jay

pay 35 quid each time you swap em over onto same rims - mine are 17" alloys off a bmw and low profile.... or get a set of steel wheels and put winters on. I pay each time in swap cos steelies look shabba. But if yer not fussed over winter time get a set of steel rims -some people also drop a size too and that makes em cheper if not as low profile.

    Re: Winter tyres!!!!

ive got 17" low profiles with winters on a rear wheel drive bmw and they work great. If it was gonna have plenty of snow i would throw a bag of of sand or spuds in the boot to add some weight to the rear tyres. Drove round in the snow last year up our ungritted or ploughed lane where it was over a foot deep and it flew up.

i used quick fit - 4x marangonis with puncture and replacement warranty under £400 and theyre spot on. They charged 35 for swapping over. And i think they were having 25% off tyres at the mo wernt they???
