Jacob knows that without the injury, he would probably have been sold in January 2012. He has been offered a new contract at 3 times his old deal, which is still on the table. He needs the club to get him fit and put him back in the shop window by giving him first team games. He knows that this is also in the clubs interest. He also knows that the club has the option of a tribunal if a fee cannot be agreed until he is 24 years old, in 2 years time. His agents has told him that he is good enough to play in the Premiership and can expect many times the salary offer when he does. What does he do?

In my view, he tries to negotiate a one year deal including a sell on clause for £500k.

The club responds that they want a 3 year deal with no sell on clause.

Jacob's agent rejects that deal because Jacob reaches 24 in 2 years after which, he points out, the club will unable to use the tribunal system and will get nothing if he simply waits out his contract. A three year contract is therefore pointless as it would be in their party's interest.

The club point out that having a bad injury has mental as well as physical consequences and he may never be as good as before meaning that both he and the club face equal financial risks.

Jacob's agent reiterates the point that his client wants to play at the highest level he can, and provided his form and fitness return, it will be in both the club and Jacob's interest that he is sold.

The discussions stall and compromise has to be agreed.

What would you agree if you were in Don's position

Sorry, but you both failed your interview for Don's position on the BFC board. I am afraid that a more constructive answer is required.

At this point I think he needs us more than we need him so I have to agree with the previous two answers and I'd also be telling him to make his mind up or **** off. His agent, like all other agents is a self interested w@nker who should be advising his client a little better than he is.

An initial 2 year contract with the option for us to extend it should Jacob prove he's as fit and the quality of player he was before the injury.

The injury he's had could seriously inhibit him in the future.

sign a deal and put in a buy out clause that doesn't mean he can leave for the first team to wave a kitkat at him.

To all those who believe that he has no alternative but to accept our offer I would offer the following possibility.

Jacob's contract ends in June when he will be doing his rehab. If he leaves his contract to run out, he will be entitled to go to arbitration. The parties will identify that they have been unable to agree a contract and will both will state their positions as I outlined in my opening remarks. The arbitrator will have in his mind that it is restraint of trade to deny anyone the chance to be able to work for a living, but he cannot enforce an individual to work for anyone, especially if there is no existing contract between the parties. He will therefore be looking for a compromise. For those who do not like the current situation, how would you look it if the compromise was that Jacob would be able to join another club but that any future profits when he is sold are shared 50/50 between his new club and BFC. If I pointed out that his new club could be Leeds or either of the Sheffield giants, how would everyone feel about this potential situation then.

What if he converts to be a follower of David Icke and belives that Lizards rule the world ? How much would a sell on clause be worth then ?

At the end of the day the game has changed. Any potential buyer would want proof that he's fully recovered from his injury and that he capable of meeting the demands of Championship football at the very least.

Not quite sure what point you're trying to make.

1/2 a good season and now he's had a serious injury, l'd snap Barnsley's hands off if they have offered him this great contract The Don speaks of. I think many fans just want a end to it all, its been going on for a while and no matter what Mr Butterfield decides we'll still be there next season and the season after.....

What potential buyer? His new club pay nothing for him but are required to share any sell on fee 50/50 with BFC until he reaches the age of 24. Tell me, if BFC were offered a player for nothing who was reputedly worth £1m last year but he is recovering from a cruciate ligament injury, would you be in favour of taking the risk. Remember that you have a potential £500k profit in just 6 months. I think Leeds would see it as good business after seeing what he did to them at Elland Road, especially following Howson's transfer.

Wtf is this thread about, he either signs our contract or moves on. I suspect he will be doing the latter we have shown our commitment & gratitude to him by offering him 3 or 4 times his current deal. So far he seems to be showing BFC contempt.

No idea. The purpose of my original post was to try to get people thinking about the difficulies of running a football club. Don Rowing has been under pressure from a minority on here who appear to think that his job is easy. So I picked a hypothetical situation to find out which fan were prepared to commit themselves to opinions which are clearly wrong, and which fans want to judge the club's actions only when they have the benefit of hindsight. It seems that most either want the benefit of hindsight or are not prepared to play games. Ah well - failed again.

"maw money maw money maw money". Basically that's summing up this matter. A player who has had half a season at championship level now thinks he can play in the top flight.

Tell Buttercup if he doesn't want to show any loyalty he can **** off, take away the offer of a contract because he's had long enough to sign it, and show him who's boss.

Because his agent has convinced him he is Messi and like many footballers they haven't got enough sense to see any further than their agents and money. Its simple now, either Butts doesn’t want to be here or he does and if I was Don I'd tell him he has until the end of the month to make his mind up or the offer will be withdrawn.
