and even part of their inflated salaries. If RBS is loss making then surely the general public is paying the bonuses and not the Bank itself.

RBS isnt run as one big department.

They run in quite a lot of different departments which have different targets.

That may explain why some departments qualify for a bonus, although it is still ethically dubious if the business cannot afford it. However, main board directors receiving a bonus from a loss-making business is a disgrace. They can ONLY be judged on the overall performance of the business, and in my view a bonus funded from losses is tantamount to fraud against the shareholders.

To be honest and I think people need to look at the bigger picture here. If the bank didnt pay bonuses the top financial workers would up sticks and go to another bank that will. If any bank hit the wall I can guarantee that there would be a far greater financial deficit for the tax payer to fill.

The employees thrying to fix the issues at RBS etc arent necessarily the ones to cause it in the first place and the CEO has already said it is a 5 year plan to sort the mess out and get them back on a sound footing.

So there may be an arguement for the previous management to be more accountable for their bad decisions and at least payback the bonuses they received. The streamlining which has been taking place has had a high human cost in terms of job losses. The theory is that the profitable parts of the business will continue to develop while large losses have been written off elsewhere. However in an unpredictable economy at best RBS will only return to pre 2008 profitability in 5 years time if all goes to plan with a much reduced workforce.

They would get there a lot quicker if they weren't paying absurd bonuses. I don't buy the idea they would all up sticks either. To where would they all go? Only a certain amount of jobs to go round. And if all banks had morals on this that option would be removed. They get damn good salaries, the bonus culture is sheer greed.

So why dont they wait 5 years and if the mess is sorted they can have a bonus,or would that be too much like living in the real world.

There is definitely some simplistic and sensationalist reporting of the issues here.
Bonuses are part of a defined salary package against particular targets. If you start saying that bonuses can only be paid if the bank makes a profit you may as well say that all the employees should take a wage cut as well.

I think there is a blurring of issues between paying people a salary that reflects the job and is comparable with the rest of the industry and the blatant piss take by some senior executives and traders of lining their pockets with large wads whilst steering their bank into huge losses.

Also its not always just the senior executives that get a bonus quite often they are distributed over the whole workforce not just the "fat cats"

How come, for don't doing my job, effectively for 25 years in the public sector, having had a post freeze for 3 years now, not causing any upset to anyone, Ir cost the tax payer BILLIONS, I have NEVER had a fekin bonus ? I am not guaranteed a great pension, or massive pay off when I do retire?
Bonuses are STEALING from people like myself ...
