I live well away as you all know, but my roots do not....if I was still up there I would be appalled at that nonsensical pile of crap. Surely the people who live in and around Barnsley should have a say in this. After all its their money thats gonna be chucked at it. Was there any kind of canvassing as to the views of the people. Perhaps a design competition may have shown what the folk would like. Seems to me its Hobsons choice here...have to wonder who's palm/s have been greased.

Majority of cost is put up by private companies and it's sited on private land - So no, the people of tarn doesn't get much of a say in this.

It's going up this week, earliest I've seen mention of it was dated 2 weeks ago, like you say the drawings/model should have been put on display beforehand, probably too late now but I've emailed my discontent to my MP and local councillors.

Baghdad stylee demolition required - everybody whacking it with their shoes.

Incidentally, for what it's worth I agree with YN's suggestion for a suitable memorial - not this contrived piece of nonsense. If we have to have it swap it with the Joseph Locke statue.

    Art by committee

No thanks. Cannot think of anything worse. What a boring, bland world we'd live in if that's how we did things. Far prefer one person to have a vision and follow it through. That's not to say I like statue that has been proposed, I don't, but them's the breaks. Since when has a piece of art been universally liked? Since when has anything been universally liked? Maybe it's a bit too left field for me and I'll never like it. Maybe, once it's in situ, it might grow on me. Either way I'd prefer to leave art to the artist and not be meddling in their business.

I like it. I think it's pretty good and I'm looking forward to seeing it.

    Re: Art by committee

I agree. However why should one person be able to choose what is puclically and permanently displayed and represents the public?

If that weird lass wants to call a tent art then fair enough, we have a choice whether we want to go and see it. If some bloke wants to paint people like matchsticks then thats up to him, its up to us if we look at the paintings. But something put forever on public display in the town centre is different in my opinion.

It's in a public space but on South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (private) land.

Apart from the council making a contribution towards it's cost (no idea how much), it ain't anything we would have a say in.

Nope I've not heard a thing about it until a week or so ago and it's nearly ready to be placed in it's spot. As far as I am aware there was no public consultation or even any opinion gathering before the money was wasted on it.

While I agree with you in principal I think the fact that this piece of crap so clearly misses the point it's trying to make that perhaps on this occasion some type of consultation would have helped.

I may well think it's a nice sculpture when I see it, I really like sculptures, but it'll never represent to me what it's supposed to represent.

The fact that it cost £165,000 is what really grates on me.

What a load of reactionary pillocks inhabit this site

For what it's worth (and only having seen the photo) it looks good to me. The remit to the artist was obviously about heritage rather than history. To show a young person with their roots based in a coal seam seems entirely appropriate. There's a great deal more stuff going on without getting worked up about this!!

Even though it is on private land and is being privately funded, it is our town heritage that is being represented by the statue, not one man's idea of what that representation should be.

IMO they should have proposed maybe three or four ideas and let the public decide how they want to represent OUR town's heritage.

    Don't be daft

You'd just get a statue of a miner with a lamp and a pick.

Which is what it should have been!

You know, sort of like the steel workers one in Meadowhall.
