Knowing that we have little money to spend, I've been thinking of lower league players who I think would add something to our team. Some of them would cost a fee, but at the start of the season Hill said he was allowed to spend money on saleable assets - that strategy may have changed, or be subject to change (see £500k for Vaz Te as an example). Stuart Beavon - CF (Wycombe) - Seems to be a decent player and scores a fair few goals in an arguably crap team. Mustapha Carayol - AM (Bristol Rovers) - Ever since we were linked to him I've noticed him on the highlights. Seems to have a lot of potential and scores some exciting goals. Always good to have this sort of player as the fans love it. Gary Roberts - LW (Huddersfield) - I've thought he is an excellent player for a few seasons now. I doubt we'd be at the front of the queue for his signature though. Dean Cox - RW (Leyton Orient) - Has a quality delivery and scores a few. Possibly the sort of winger we need. James Coppinger - AM (Doncaster) - Despite the fact he isn't that well liked around Oakwell, he's a quality player who can open doors. Brian Stock - CM (Doncaster) - Another player who would fit the Hillcroft way. Michael Jacobs - AM (Northampton) - Highly rated young player, seems to have ability in abundance. Would fit the saleable asset mould. Any others to add to the list? Please try to not ruin the thread with petty arguments, it's been too long since we had a proper discussion on here.
If that Beavon is in contract we'd be looking at 500k minimum unfortunately. I did notice he has done very well this season though.
The only proven championship quality you've picked is for us to pick up even more players that are used to losing. Gary Roberts i've mentioned on here the other week. Be an excellent free transfer, knows where the net is and would jump at playing at an high level. Sadly like you said i'd imagine we've little chance as others will offer him more money.
My logic was based on the way injuries have affected us this season. I think KH has realised that we had a decent first 15, but beyond that we were sadly lacking. Therefore, if we were to lose 2/3 "big earners", then I'd think we'll replace them with 4/5 lower league gambles. We obviously need to improve the size of our squad. In terms of "championship quality" players, the only position I'd be willing to spend decent money on is a commanding centre half. I can't really think of any likely targets in that area though.
Dean Leacock centre half Sammy Clingan centre midfielder Jon Parkin striker All expreienced at this level and all out of contract at the end of the season i believe.
Messi, rooney, inesta and that ref that scored second goal for chelsea and a few others should see us safe
All 3 players are known to be on big wages at their current clubs. Sammy Clingan is also made of glass and not half the player he used to be. Although I don't like Dean Leacock - he might be the type of player we need. Parkin would never pass the Hillcroft fitness camp in the summer!
I believe quite a few of Stuart Beavons family still live in Barnsley,I think His grandad was a Stairfoot lad who played for Wolves
