Can anybody recommend somebody in the Barnsley area?
Recently got my old guitar out and tried to teach myself but don't have the knack or the perseverance. Also, be good if they did double up lessons where I can learn with someone else, but not essential.

I know it's not as good as a personal teacher, but someone on this bbs recommended justinguitar.com to me once, and I think it's a pretty awesome (and free!) online tutorial.

Check out the Beginner's Course, that should get you started at least. Have fun! :)

I was in a similar position

Only really messed around for 20 odd years without really progressing beyond knowing basic chord shapes. cheap guitars and zero practice hampered my progress beyond that.

My mate buggered off to NZ for 2 years and loaned me two half decent guitars and I refound enthusiasm to learn. Much much easier with a decent guitar. Had about 10 lessons at Stringstocks on Donny road which were great (with a young kid called Tom) but I found diminishing return. Practice is the key.

Invest a couple of hundred quid or more on a decent guitar with an easy action, throw in a few lessons but largely I'd search youtube for some lessons on a song you'ld really like to be able to play and practice, practice, practice.

Buy a guitar stand and put the guitar where you are likely to pick it up every day, pick a song or an excercise and stick to it until you can play without mistakes, then move on to something else.

Agree that practice is key, play every day for at least 30 minutes. Your fingers will hurt at first and mastering 'barre' chords especially the 'F' can be off-putting. But ultimately rewarding. Family aside, deciding to play guitar 10 years ago is one of the best decisions I ever made. Some people find the structire of lessons and targetsthat a good teacher sets really helpful, especially if you respond to peer pressure (I'm more likely to do something if I think I'll let them down or look bad in their eyes if I don't do it). Looked at the site linked and that is very competitive.

It can vary from person to person. I have 2 pupils who are complete opposites. One had lessons weekly for about 4 months and quickly reached a level where she now only comes back when it involves more advanced theory. Admittedly she already played flute and sax so had a headstart when i came to reading music, but playing bass is a different discipline. The other pupil, who started at the same time, has proressed at a much slower rate, but he's still reached a better level than he ever thought possible. Also, he has always said that books and online lessons, which he tried before coming to me, were complete gibberish to him.
It's a money thing for most. I would always go to a (good) tutor if you can afford it, but if not then the internet has a heap of stuff to help you.

I played quite regularly, a good 7/8 years ago while I was at school, only thing they taught you there was to play things like Flinstones theme, never progressed onto chords. However, i've learnt a couple myself but I now feel the need to have a mentor sat at the side of me to help push me forward.
Great advice though guys, gonna have a youtube of some songs and see if I can get learning a few.
And also I have a guitar stand, and regularly pick it up throughout the day.
And probably gonna go with Jim, thanks for the recommendations. He sounds a good deal.
