Although I was straight on the phone the phone to hosting company last Friday after the site went down it has taken them this long to fix and get the site running on a new server. Obviously this isn't acceptable from a support point of view, especially after the last outage so I'm going to be looking for a new host where I have more control on the server (VPS/Dedicated server). The downside is it will cost more money per month :(

If anyone has any recommendations I would love to hear them.

    Cheers

    Gally.

    [UPDATE]

Yes we had yet anohter outage tonight as the hosting company fixed the login issue by completely changing the sites ip address without any warning.

Myself and AndyTyke have found one or two posts about out hosts which are rather worrying. I have left some feedback also:

Me and my mates forum www.tupwrestlingforum.com has been going since August 10th 2005 without problems and we use Web Wiz software. They have a decent forum where staff are on during the days so you don't even have to ring them up if you want to ask something. Earlier this year something fishy apparently was going on so they automatically took our forum down. We emailed them and we were back up and running a few hours later. Nothing but good stories about the software/company. It's always run really quickly and the latest update has a spam mod where if someone tries to sign up with one of the thousands of known spam email addresses the company are aware of they are banned without you having to do anything. You can also put a chatroom above the forum homepage for MSN style chat.

You already know my suggestion http://www.atjeu.com/

or possibly http://www.ovh.co.uk/vps/ of which I have known people run vbulletin on

I just know atjeu reliable and support is instant

you could possible look at a couple of ads on the forum

The forum software isn't the issue its the server its hosted on. Vbulletin software which this forum uses has 1000's of ad ons

chatboxes, cometchat, quote notifications, spam filters, bot filters etc, etc, etc

Each one you add to the forum puts a little more strain on the server. So the more you use the better the server/host you need

The dedicated/vps could be expensive. Why not keep on shared but look at someone like hostinguk.net whose support is very good. Depends on database size etc i guess. Their sales guys could suggest something.

As for managed hosting we use Rackspace but again expensive for a self funded site.

    Other options:

Why not add adsense onto the site for revenue? Non intrusive style ads and it could all go to the server

    - or just get one or two dedicated sponsors to have their logo/sales message at the top and they pay for the server?
    - or another sponsor to have their link/sales message at the bottom of each post (like a sig).
    - There is also the donate button option.

With the number of page impressions etc it should be quite attractive to local businesses. It shouldnt have to come out of your pocket.

Its been mentioned before but if its not a significant sum of money what about a contribution towards the cost from members? I dont know how many people would be willing to contribute, I supose it would depend on how much.

    Agree with Mario's idea.
Or maybe get BFC to officially endorse the forum or sumat?
Or perhaps we should merge with Rochdale's forum?

Sounds like a good idea and we could create an actual clique ;-)

However vbulletin is notoriously bad since Internet Brands took over.
