What type of player? With Parker available he's a redundant one. He doesn't do the dirty stuff as well as Parker and I don't think he's good enough with the ball/mobile enough going forward to take one of the other midfield spots.

And calling Downing a talent is generous.

1st of all there's no need to call him Mr G Barry he isn't on trial, secondly if you watched a football match rather than a FOOTBALLER you would see Gareth Barry does all the ugly work your hero Messi wouldn't dream of doing.

But you know best maybe you should be in Roys place in the Ukraine

He's yet another limited English midfielder like Milner. He's surrounded by far better foreign laikers at Citeh.

I have had my doubts in the past about Barry but whenever I've seen him this season he has been excellent. You can't be first choice for the Premier League winners and not be a good player and he does loads of unseen work. I think he is the kind of player who never gets appreciated - Carrick being another at Man Utd. I don't think they'd won anything for 3 or 4 years until Carrick arrived. Parker gets more accolades because he runs about more and flings himself in to tackles, but all three are very good at what they do, Carrick being a better passer of the ball than the other two.

Carrick is one of the best passers of the ball in the world imo. Paul Scholes mk2. Shame he hasn't been picked, I don't have much of a problem with Barry but for me he's carried a bit at city, and Carrick just has the edge over him. Carrick is a very unsung player, and has had a great season for United.

Carricks a very good foorball and that shows what roys got ti pick from when he cant get in.
Milners a good footballer, can play 5 positions.

So you could play Barry at the side of Gerrard.

Unlike you mate, I use this forum in a fun, light-hearted manner. I have my opinions and will express them. IMO, neither Parker, Carrick or Barry have much between them. They are all quite decent in performing a particular task in central midfield. But they are not world-class or world-beaters. Once upon a time, Gerrard and Lampard were IMO world-class. And, on occasion, they reproduce a display of that nature. But let us be honest, our midfield, centrally especially, looks devoid of mobility, and pace. It did so 4 years ago in South Africa, and since we have picked the same players again, I expect this to be a major problem for England in the upcoming tournament.
I cannot for the life of me understand how Johnson and Downing have been selected, but when picking my own 'best XI' from the squad of players that Roy has chosen, I can still put together a team that ought to at least finish 2nd in the group.
We have a world-class keeper in Hart. Some quality center halves, and Cole is still - on his day - another world-class player at left back. Right back though is a worry. I hope we play young Jones there, because Johnson is not capable of defending. Much like our own Scott Wiseman, he prefers to get forward, and leaves us exposed.
We'll play 1 up top IMO, probably Carroll until Rooney returns, with Young and Walcott wide. That isn't great, but what choice do we have?
So it's just the central 3 of Parker/Barry, Lampard and Gerrard that have me firm in my belief that IF, IF, we get through the group stage, and meet a Spain, Portugal, Holland etc, we'll be mugged off and passed around again ala Germany 2 years ago.
This tournament IMO was a chance for us to follow the examples of the likes of Spain, Germany and Holland, and introduce a handful of youngsters, giving them a taste of tournament football in preparation for the World Cup in Brazil. Instead, we have gone for the tried, trusted and failed old-guard.
But what do I know eh? My favourite English players in my time were Paul Gascoigne, Paul Scholes, Gary Lineker and David Beckham. We haven't an attacking player of their quality in our current setup, until Rooney returns. And as good as Wayne undoubtedly is, he rarely performs well for England, and often loses control of his notorious temper which has already cost us on previous occasions.
    But again, I know nowt

I want us to go with 4231 Whitey.

You could play Rooney deep and either any o the other three up front depending on what you want.
Defoe in behind, Carroll to hold up play and get it to either Rooney or the wings to course problems.
welbeck can do either and really should is ability's this season with consistent displays and really really good ones against the likes of Everton who are a good team. Especially in the second half of the season.

Not been impressed with Welbeck if I'm honest. Although he has struck up a decent understanding with Rooney at United, so maybe Roy sees that as an option.
I think 4231 is the formation we'll go with, but I'm not a fan of England playing both Lampard and Gerrard together. And with Gerrard new captain, I fancy Milner, Gerrard and Parker to be the trio we use unless Parker's fitness doubts remain. Jack Wilshere is a big loss.
But despite my worries, I shall don my 3 lions top in June, and cheer them on in the vain hope that they surprise us all.

    Agree Wilshires a loss.
Would have lkied to have seen Rodwell or Huddlestone in squad but not to be although wouldn't mind seeing Henderson. Think Huddlestone might be injured.

Gerrards the better player for me whitey and i would pick him ahead of Lampard who's had a very good second half of the season.

Agree with most of that, and I wouldn't have minded Rodwell in the squad. I'd forgot about him tbh
