Took my 7 year old for his football practice. Told there's no point in him continuing as he's not good enough to make the team. Know he's not going to be the next Messi but FFS at 7 he's a bit young to get rejected.
Are the days when kids played football for fun a thing of the past?

Plenty of teams out there mate, find one that lets the kids enjoy playing and who knows he may just make the idiot that said that to you, into a liar. Always room for kids to improve, at 7 no-one can say what they will be like in a few years.

The arrogant barstewards.Probably leaving room for sons/nephews etc of coaching staff to fill up their teams.

    7 years old ffs.

Tell him to keep on playing and take him somewhere he will be appreciated and there is more emphasis on fun rather than snobbery mate.

what team is this?? Seems a bit harsh

As they move to the under 8's they usually play 2 games a league match and then a friendly for the players of lesser ability to show their stuff. so seem strange they would turn a player away as not being good enough.

My son started in the under 7s while the rest of the team had been training and playing for a year already. He could hardly kick the ball when he started, but quickly improved until now ready to start in the under 10's next season as one of the better players.

Turning a kid away at 7 on ability is complete madness.

He also plays rugby league where they have a rule in the younger age groups that each player must have equal amount of game time no matter what the ability

What an incredibly stupid and hurtful thing to say to a seven year old. As others have said football should be about fun at that age and how can he say he isn't good enough. If he really enjoys playing then ignore the advice and take him to another team where there is a little more emphasis on fun and enjoyment.

    That's absurd.

Some players mature earlier than others, some don't fully mature and realise their potential until 14/15/16/17 etc...

Tell him to keep at it.

Obviously not a good club (or coach). Even if your kid was the next Messi he'd be better off somewhere else.

I'd be very tempted to report them to the regional FA. I imagine they might want a word with the club.

Agree entirely someone needs to take a look if he is a fit and proper person to be in control of kids.

hold your horses about reporting the coach, for all we know the 7 year old kid could just be standing on the pitch scratching his head and picking his nose and not even interested in running for the ball, lets hear the full story before running to tell teacher.

As long as he's enjoying standing on the pitch scratching his head and picking his nose thats all that matters at 7 year old. Still cant go telling kids of that age to leave because they arn't good enough. Its not fecking man u

i understand to a certain extent but IF the kid is showing no interest at all in the football and is just dumped on the pitch to pick and scratch at himself then its only fair to tell the parents the truth and maybe in a years time the kid may have developed a bigger interest in the game and would rather chase and kick the ball instead of picking and scratching.

Some of these junior football managers

Think they're top b0llock because they're managing a football team. Doesn't matter what age you are, if you enjoy playing football there should be a place for you.

Re: Some of these junior football managers

    Thanks for the replies.
Lad has bags of interest and enthusiasm and never stops running but he's not a brilliant footballer. It's not the fact that he's not on the team that bothers him but the fact he's been told not to come to any more practices.
I'm sure we'll find another club for him but I think some of these coaches are taking things far too seriously and fancy themselves as Premiership coaches.

Which team has actually rejected him?
