Today is the 2nd leg of the Playoffs in the Secunda division in Spain with the winner after the final being promoted to La Liga. The new rule is that if the scores are tied, the highest ranking team goes through without penalies taking place. Bet Sheff U wished that rule was in place when their game with Huddersfield took place!

Could make for an ultra defensive performance from the highest ranking side. Once the play offs start everything needs to be equal for the integrity of the competition.

All the highest ranked team has to do is put all 11 of their players inside their own six yard box for 90 minutes, and you could be playing against a team of Messi, Ronaldo etc and they still wouldn't score, and you'd still get promoted. Poor rule.

And Swansea would have taken our place in the Championship after our final. Cr@p rule.

I dont agree with the play offs anyway, the top 3 should go up, if there are 3 promotion places available. It is a season long quest to get promotion, it should not be settled on just 3 games at the end.

I have always said it and Yes I know Barnsley got promoted through the play offs, that does not mean they are right though.

The play offs and penalties are entertaining unless some other more entertaining format can be thought up I don't understand the need to change. Somtimes I think we lose perspective of what football is all about!

They will never change - like you say they are entertaining, they bring in more money to the game, and crucially in my opinion, they keep the season alive until the end right down to about 8th or 9th in the division. I would hate to see them go, and I would hate to see them tinkered with - they are fine as they are. OK, they may be perceived to be unfair when the 3rd placed team loses in the play offs, but we all know the rules at the start.

i'm surprised they havnt come up with the equivelent for the relegation places, owt to make a some more money......i'm not particularly in favour of the play offs, but having said that if it wasnt for them we'd probably still be in league one.

There was the time Charlton finished 4th bottom in top div and played against 5th in 2nd div with also 3rd playing 4th in that division to sort out a final. Charlton could stay up or one of the others get promoted.

Charlton beat Leeds 2-1 a.e.t. in front of 18,000 at St Andrews. Pre Sky 86/87.

Beacause an English team has just won European footballs biggest prize on them. Do you think if the Krauts had won they would be wanting them scrapped? I think not, now who is in charge of the 2014 rule change group - ah yes franz beckenbaur!

Would be very risky though, concede a late goal.

I hate penalty shoot outs, would rather just have sudden death extra time. Works brilliantly in play-off ice hockey

I thought german football, especially the national team had historically done well in penalty shootouts! :)

Maybe they fear the tide is turning! I think Blatter and co would blow up if we progressed in the euro's via a penalty shooutout!!
