    Final group A table:

Czech Rep: 6 pts, GD -1
    Greece: 4 pts, GD 0
    Russia: 4 pts, GD +2
    Poland: 4 pts, GD -1

So, Greece finish above Russia despite of having a worse goal difference... apparently head-to-head matches between two teams count before goal difference then?

In that case, shouldn't Holland be out for sure as well? Germany already have 6 points, and even if Holland beat Portugal in their last match, they'll still have only 3 points, the same as Denmark.
And as well all know, Denmark beat Holland in their first group match, so surely Denmark should proceed to the next stage then... Am I missing something obvious here?!

  2. i thought about this, if holland beat the cheats portugal and germans beat danes, they will all be on 3 and all beat each other so who goes through

    You're missing something

If Holland beat Denmark and Germany beat Portugal then 3 teams will have 3 points. As they have all beaten each other it would go down to goal difference.

    Sorting rules:

    Head to head
    Goal difference
    Goals scored.

If Germany beat Denmark, and Netherland beat Portugal all the latter 3 sit on three points. Demark beat Netherlands, who beat Portugal, who beat Denmark. No way to sort by head to head, so would go to goal difference. Currently Portugal and Denmark sit on a GD of 0, and Netherland -2. 1-0 defeat for Denmark and 1-0 win for Netherland would have them all on -1, so would go to goals scored.

In those final 1-0 scenarios, Denmark and Portugal finish with 3 goals each, and Netherland finish on 2 goals. Netherlands out. Then either flip a coin for Portugal and Denmark, or Portugal go through since they beat Denmark.

Basically, if Germany win and Netherlands win by 2 or more goals, the Germans and Dutch will qualify. Dutch NEED to win. Denmark need at least a point, or a win if Netherlands don't beat Portugal.

If I'm correct in thinking holland need to win 4 - 0 just to put them on a + goal difference and hope that the sun bed thieves beat Denmark to stand any chance of progressing. Highly uikikely That there going to get through.

Oh indeed, that does make sense (except that Holland will have to beat Portugal and Germany will have to beat Denmark obviously)... :D Thanks!

Holland only have -2 goal difference at the moment. Denmark and Portugal both have 0.

    You've missed something

You've sort of missed a step here that might be confusing some people, if Germany win and Dutch win, then all games involving Germany are taken out of the reckoning and its the results and goal difference involving the 3 other teams only that are used to separate them.

    Re: You've missed something

It's the head-to-head of the teams involved that counts first.

    Group B: Sunday
    Denmark (3) v Germany (6), Portugal (3) v Netherlands (0)
Germany are not quite through, but will be as group winners (meaning a match against Greece in Gdansk) if they draw. They will be knocked out, though, if they lose to Denmark by any result other than a one-goal defeat in which Germany score at least two AND Portugal win.
Denmark will progress with any win. A draw will only be good enough if Portugal lose. If Denmark lose they are out.
Portugal will be through with victory unless Denmark win by a one-goal margin (other than 2-1 and 1-0). They will progress with a draw unless Denmark win. Portugal will also be through if they lose by a one-goal margin and Denmark are also beaten.
    • The Netherlands must win by a two-goal margin and hope Denmark also lose to finish second and take on the Czech Republic in Warsaw.

Do FIFA have a department responsible for introducing ridiculous rules that do absolutely sod all to improve the game. What is wrong with points / goal difference / goals scored and then if they can't be seperated go to head to head.

But on the flip side the rule has allowed Greece to progress and that isn't good for the tournament as a footballing spectacle.

I would have liked to see how Russia would have done in the knock-out stages; they played some good attacking football at times. Greece will be dreadful to watch.

For tie breaker rules go to WWW.livescore.com and click on tie breaker rules at the bottom of the page.
I find this site a good site for all games played around the world when in season with live updates .
