On late Sunday evening (9.30pmish) i had the wonderfully magnificent surprise of seeing an owl sat on my fence.I watched it for a good 30 minutes as it flew into the back field where i live and saw it get dive bombed by a disapproving magpie until it disappeared into the distance. I just wasnt sure what owl it was (tawny? barn?). It wasnt small thats for sure.Had a rather largish head and was a biegey brown in colour. Sorry if it may not be everyones topic but was a rare sighting for me and something that gave me a few minutes of simple pleasure.

    Teat-owl.

They're all over at this time of year. If you see one with blue and white stripes, get the shotgun out for it.

Most likely a tawny, as in the picture on the thread below. Barn owls look sort of ghostly white, although they have beautiful golden flecking in their feathers when you see them up close. Tawnies screech in sound and live in holes in trees, rather than barns, or sheds like barn-owls. Little owls are more diurnal and you may see them day, or night. They are mainly mid-brown, but flecked with white marks. They look small. Good sighting, though! They are not all that easy to spot in daylight.

I get pleasure from simple things like that - we had two foxes in the garden once - amazing to watch them. Used to take the dog for a walk in the fields behind st michael's comp and I would sit for ages watching the kestrels . Amazing

    oh absolutely

was once lucky enough to see Otters on the wesy coast of Scotland diving down and bringing scallops up and breaking them open with rocks as they lay on their backs floating in the water.I had seen that on an Attenborough series , never ever believed I would see it for real, Fantastic.

I saw a stoat once - dog and stoat sat watching each other for about five minutes - couldn't work each other out and walked past each other. There were badgers in that field as well behind st micks - sure it used to be a farm round there. We used those fields for cross country at st helens - seems to be all factories now
