I do sometimes like this idea of loyalty these days its very rare for clubs to show loyalty to players - the only reason we stood by him was we believed (and still believe) he is a valuable asset to the club either on the pitch or as a transfer fee. but we werent so loyal as to give him a contract of significant length (correctly in my view as we didnt really know if he would make it at this level 2 years ago Its not Butterfields fault that we didnt tie him to a longer contract earlier and now he (or at least his agent) believes he can play at a higher level and get more money so its hard to blame him for tring to get a better deal. If he can get one - good luck to him, if not I hope he comes back and is determined to impress and get the better deal in a years time. If he comes back and does a Colace - thats what would give reasonable cause for unhappieness on here
Agree on principal 100% Mario but we opened ourselves up to this with the Colace debacle. And Colace isn't half the player Butterfield is/could be IMO. Players and agents see us as a soft touch, and rightly so. If we had tied him down to a proper contract at the beginning of last season we wouldn't be here now in this weak bargaining position. Our poor and weak dealings on contracts will come back to bite us time and again as we are proven to be a soft touch. Low release clauses, short-term deals, no setting of deadlines... You watch - this'll be Digby/Rose/RNL in a couple of years
I get the impression that Butterfield doesnt want to move very far, Newcastle wouldve been his first choice I guess, but I have a funny feeling the takeover at Leeds is the reason for the delay and that he's actually after signing for them. I hope Im wrong, but that may be protracted and we might still be in limbo for a while yet.
Re: The luxury of "some" holidays ..... I agree with you Fraser, but why does he keep making the same mistakes in regards his own PR? He doesn't NEED Twitter. He would be best served by keeping his head down and concentrating on his professional career (which is currently in abeyance). If he does that, there won't be a problem and his detractors will need to look elsewhere for their ammunition. Stephen
Re: I get the impression If he does I'll have no respect for him whatsoever. Why sign for a club were one of their players might have ended his career. Dirty bast.ards. I sincerely hope he doesn't, and I don't think he's that kind of person.
i reckon the people that are moaning that he shouldn't sign now will be the same one's moaning in the middle of next season because we have no creativity in midfield...
