750k rising to a £1 million with appearances, he only made 46 appearances for them so l doubt we got the full whack. We've probably got a 5 figure sum out of it.
Find it quite funny looking back to when he chose us over the Pikeys and they were so bitter, they then started spouting off about how we'd paid over the odds for an injury prone defender... He played 44 games for us in one season and he's played in every game for Derby last season, so rarely missed a game in 2 seasons. They must have Dr Death on their physio team.
Really strange that Derby let him go for around the fee they paid us, especially as Burnley have £7 million burning a hole in their pockets from Rodriguez.
Terrible deal for Derby, expected him to go for around £2m. We sold him for £1m and he's had a great season since then, playing every game and he's worth pretty much same now, strange.
It shows the power players now have. A player wants away every year to get a big signing on bonus and hopefully renegotiate his salary upwards... and despite a 3 yr contract he walks for less than his actual value and the club seem pretty much powerless. Only ones to win with Shackell are him and his agent. Classic traits of a selfish show pony.
Maybe it puts into perspective some of the prices we let our players go for, thing is we arnt privy to what goes on behind closed doors when clubs players and agents are negotiating these contracts,
Maybe the sell on clause was based on profit on top of whatever they paid us for him. So in a way they may have purposely let him go for cheaper as it might have worked out better for them rather than accepting more money but having to give us some, which might have meant they ended up with less than they have got.
He can play with Trippier again like he did for us. Maybe Burnley are after our whole back four from that season. Foster next.....
The lad really has no loyalty. I thought the whole reason of a contract was that you have to stay until the end of it. For example I had to pay for my flat until the contract ran out. Contracts really mean **** all in football, which is a shame.
I could be wrong but I think in most cases there is only a signing on bonus if they are out of contract meaning no transfer fee. But fundamentally you're spot on, players like Shackell are selfish and have no concept of loyalty. If I was a chairman I would have to think long and hard before giving a player with a history of frequently changing clubs a contract.
I heard at the end of last season that the Derby chairman had decided to move towards a financial model closer to what we now employ and that they wanted rid of Shackel for this reason so I'm not sure its just player power.
