I moved away in 1987. First to Newcastle to College and then to begin my working life in Scotland. I love my hometown and defend it with a passion. From what I can see and from what family and friends tell me, the town centre has changed for the worse. Pubs and Pound Shops and the horrendous Alhambra Centre. But its my home town and I still love it. Always will. Its people not from Barnsley that stick the knife into the town. Not the ex pats.

A few years ago I had a lad working for me. He was born and raised in Barnsley but went off to uni and had come back and needed a summer job, he seemed like a nice enough lad so I set him on. After a few weeks though his hatred of Barnsley started to come through bit by bit. A hatred that bemused me. He slagged off the town, the people and everyone in it. He couldn't wait to leave. I bit my tongue.

One day he revealed that his sister was expecting her third child to the third different man, the third different man being over twice her age and she had just moved in with him. This was because "Barnsley is a **** hole, Barnsley people are small minded and have no ambition and he could not wait to get out of this hell hole."

I kindly pointed out that the fact his sister was a slag was nothing to do with her living in Barnsley, it was simply that she liked ****. There are girls that like **** everywhere and if she had grown up in any other part of the world she would still be like a birdcage at London zoo. Also, Barnsley is a **** hole, in parts. Just like any other town or city in the country it has parts of it that are **** holes and parts of it that are as nice as anywhere you can care to mention. Also, just like everywhere else, people can be small minded and people can be as broad minded as they come but if he continues to slate Barnsley and Barnsley people I'll let some of the more small minded people in the warehouse know his feelings.

He didn't show up a lot after that. I got told he now lives in Luton. Nice.

I'd read Mr X's post this morning so I knew exactly who and what you meant. He makes it very easy to form a negative opinion about him.

    Re: EH???

That could be about, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham , Ipswich, Norwich, Derby, etc etc etc.
People seem to think that only Barnsley has a problem with as you call them "chav/scrubbers" yet there are far more in many many other places than Barnsley and anyone that thinks otherwise is a bufoon!

Just to add some of the prettiest places in Britain are bloody awful places to live, try Stratford upon Avon for a start!!!

I love my town and my club

Neither are beautiful or glamorous. They both have many faults. But they are mine and I simply wouldn't swap them. I have frequently been accused of being ignorant & small minded, as I haven't moved from my place of birth and I choose to have the same political leanings of my parents and their parents before them. Perhaps I'm not as well educated as my critics. Perhaps I'm exactly the sort of person they have been keen to get away from. I promise I'll do my best not to lose too much sleep over them and their opinions.:)

Re: I love my town and my club

Well said. I love Barnsley and I love Barnsley FC. And yes I think that the town as a lot of faults and the club certainly does and I will tell people that and I will criticise the club but it is because I want it to improve and despite it being bad at a lot of things and making a lot of mistakes its the club I love and its the town I love full of the people I love.

I think I would leave Barnsley for somewhere else if the right place and time and reason came up but I wouldnt just turn my back on it and call it a shithole because it will always be my home regardless of where I live.

Most of the country is going downhill and Barnsley is far from the worst.

At least we haven't got these African gangs stabbing each other.

    Yet.

being born and bred in doncaster, lived in various countries around the world in my army days, as a sub contracter installing fibre optic cable and a long distance lorrydriver been and seen most of the country at some point in one year i worked as far apart as truro and the outer hebredes, Barnsley is nowhere near a shithole, to be honest i wouldnt live anywhere else, ok there are certain areas that are not as desirable as others but thats the same as anywhere. i was in donny last week seeing rellies and lets just say english is a dying language, i overheard 2 asian women talking and 1 said she'd been here 6 months and felt really at home as she could speak polish already !

Anyone who thinks Barnsley Town Centre is a no go area talks ********............

Barnsley has never been a no go area and I've been here 61 years.

The Alhambra Centre is a nice shopping area, very clean with a nice range of shops.

I have worked in Barnsley, Stockport, Kings Lynn, Chesterfield and now in Leeds and Barnsley beats the lot of them.

For everyone I know who enjoys living away I know two who can't get back to Tarn quick enough.

Some stuff in this thread is a good wind up though and folks still bite.

Inner City Doncaster is proper third world, and the tattooed white smackheads who live there aren't any better either.
