Re: if you don't want t put on weight and make things better in the long run

I smoked 40 a day, the way I quit was patches and alot of support from friends and family, kept telling me how well I was doing, I didn't want to let them down.

I stopped cold turkey about 8 years ago. Having said that I'd tried gum and all sorts and it must have been about my 6th or 7th serious attempt (once for 7 months right up to that Euro 1996 penalty shoot out!)

My mates using these electronic cigarettes and he reckons its helped him cut down and started to reduce the nicotine and will now sometimes smoke them with no-nicotine. #

    Good luck!

Good luck Merlin. I am about to do the same thing. My girlfriend and i are expecting a baby, i dont want to be smoking when we have a child and it makes you realise what the money could be spent on and how many more years ill get to see my son. I invested in one of those electric cigs from the allambrah, they seem to be pretty good but not tried it full time as of yet. I wish you and your lass the best of luck with it! Ill need some myself.

i stopped in 2002 as i was smoking 40+ a day. tried to stop a few times b4 did a few weeks then went back.
decided to give the nhs stop smoking club ago and it did wonders for me. you meet likeminded people with same ambitions and swap ideas etc makes so your not alone and can be good fun too if you get a good class as i did.
anyway whatever you decide good luck and remember nothing works without willpower but sometimes willpower on its own is not always enough.

    ps

i feel loads better for it too.

Best of luck to you two too, and all the best with the little un to come.

I'll look out for them, pal.

    Will do, mate, cheers.

Cheers, Marlon. I think it's more in the mind, for me at least.

I smoked up to the late 70's. As I was a drummer in the Barnsley Area, the time we had between dances (Three Cranes) was always taken up with smoking. All the band members smoked but what made me stop was the death of a close relation. I saw her going downhill to the point where she couldn't go upstairs as she was so out of breath. Years later my mother -in -law died because she smoked (coroners verdict) I have now attained the age of 86 and I am still very active. My only trouble is the old legs let me down now and then. Will power and a couple of jolts as mentioned did the trick. I have never wanted to smoke and the smell of smoke is obnoxious which smokers don't seem to understand. Good luck.

I stopped about 4 years and 2 months ago after I smoked my last 200 fags I brought back from Goa.

The main point is you have to 'want to stop'. I'd had a couple of previous failures but it was down to bad planning.

    My advice is:-

Only try to stop if you want to. Doing it for someone else and it wont work
Plan when it is best to stop. If you have anything coming up like Birthdays or Xmas then forget it because the draw will be too big. So plan your stopping date in advance with plenty of time afterwards where your diary is free from events that can get in the way of your motivation.

I found it amazingly easy the last time but like I said I planned it properly and also I was motivated to stop. I used patches for a week and chewing gum for about another week or so.

Good Luck - You will definitely feel better for doing it and more money to spend on other more important things.

I tried quitting when I was still with my ex, but I had a short temper and it was costing a fortune in windows everytime she annoyed me and I threw her through the windows.

Should have thrown the bint down the stairs. Much cheaper, and more amusing to watch. Allegedly.

Another one in support of Champix - my sister stopped with it and found it easy - you use them while smoking for a week or so and then wake up one day and realise that you've got no inclination to smoke - it turns off the receptors in your brain that trigger the craving.

I have tried champix and zyban over the years. Both made me sick as a dog after a week of taking them and had to cease.
