Pick 2 of our past defenders that you would like to see paired up at the back. Now me, bearing in mind how football is played nowadays I would go with Paul Futcher and Stuart Gary . Arjaan De Zeeuw came very close. Just think, with most clubs playing 1 up front either of these 2 could float between a back 4 and the midfield. Both excellent footballers.
Yes there have been better defenders, but you can't dive in like you used to.
Pointless thread I know, but who would your 2 centre halves be?

    What a great question

The first player I'd pick would be Pat Howard. He could look after himself in the Third & Fourth Divisions. However, he also comfortably made the step up to top flight football and was a regular for most of the decade with Newcastle, Arsenal and Birmingham. He was also my first Barnsley hero & a fellow Dodworther, so there may be a slight hint of bias!:D I believe we'd also need a commanding and powerful centre half, so I'd chose Mick McCarthy as his partner. Mick also showed he could comfortably play at the highest level, like Howard, even playing in a World Cup Quarter Final against Italy. I believe both lads would be able to adjust their game to modern requirements, whilst maintaining the hard as nails approach when needed.

    As I said mate

Seeing as Mick was also in the year above me at Worsbrough High School, bias played a huge part in my selection. :D As well as your two suggestions (classy and superb players both), I'd like to put forward the names of Eric Winstanley, Neil Cooper, Ian Evans, Larry May, Mark Smith, Gary Fleming and Steve Davis. All excellent defenders and all good on the ball, capable of starting attacks with their top notch distribution.

I would say Futcher and De Zeeuw but their pulse rate wouldn't register 50 combined, too laid back for a pairing methinks.

I'll go with Futcher and Taggart.

    Re: What a great question

My memory is that it's wasn't so much Blake, more the way that Fleming landed after stretching for the ball.

IMO Blake should have stopped play rather than going on to score ;)

Looking at what we have, I'd like McNulty as the left centre half with a commanding leader at the side of him.

The name that hasn't been mentioned so far and i think would be ideal alongside him is Malcolm Shotton. I'd say Mark Smith runs a close second and Taggart third.

An organiser and a leader who the players will listen to and respect. Somebody who can attack the ball at set pieces either end of the pitch would be good too. We conceded far too many set pieces and didn't score enough from them.
