Wait, you mean Liverpool didn't just let a highly rated, much sought player go to us for free, they actually want something for him? They want some benefit from the deal?

    Don, what have you done?

Exactly, how do most people on here think we get theses types of players, it's simply through allowing the players/agents to write clauses into there contracts which enables then to move on should a bigger team come in for them. I for 1 wish we had more control but unfortunately we don't, If the club didn't sign these players and they signed for another club they'd be labeled as useless and the don would be the biggest **** in the world again.

So long as its a sell on % and not a "adam hammil 500k release clause!"

Hopefully the dons at least learnt that was a major balls up.

It wasn't a "major balls up", it was the only way to get a really good player to sign for us. Without that release clause, Hammill would've been a Leeds player.

    I don't buy that.

Arjan de Zeeuw was a really good player. Adam Hammill was good for a few months. But we got de Zeeuw for a nominal fee. Scouting works wonders.

Same goes for Martin Bullock, who was twice the player Hammill will ever be.

The players are out there. You just have to know where to look.

We signed both of those players from absolute obscurity, it's completely different. Hammill was a graduate from a top Premiership club and had a much bigger club than us (Leeds) after him.

Besides, Martin Bullock came from Eastwood. People on here are on the verge of breakdown when we sign someone from Leyton Orient.

'Some' people on here, actually. And anyway, just because 'some' on here - a message board - are up in arms if we sign an obscure player, I doubt that's a reason to sack the idea.

Anyway, when starting this thread, I didn't say I was against the deal we'd agreed for Silva. I merely pointed out the clause. Something we didn't know about until now.

I agree that it's often the only way we can attract a certain calibre of laiker. But it's the idiots in charge of our club that worry me. If they had agreed to enter negotiations with a certain Mr Butterfield last summer we would have received his true value. And I'm quite certain that Keith Hill thinks similarly.

So because "some" people on here are against signing obscure players, we shouldn't "sack the idea".

But because some obscure players we've signed in the past (Bullock, De Zeeuw) have proved to be great signings, we shouldn't agree to clauses to sign players like Hammill?

I would rather we had a constant stream of players who are improving and with the drive to better themselves who come entertain us, contribute to the team and then leave, then players happy with the level they're at.

But he's only on a 2 yeah contract. If he's any good he'll go for **** all like all the others and both us and Liverpool will lose out.

The same will happen to this batch of academy lads too if they impress

Forgot he was on a 2 year, it's a good point.

May have been another case of 'if we want to sign him for more than 2 years he wouldn't want to come'.

    I never said that.

As for the Hammill deal, the 500k clause was a joke. No ifs or buts.

If this Silva turns out to be extraordinary this season, then the deal isn't a bad one, because we could perhaps get a couple of mill for him, of which I presume Liverpool will get about a third. Not bad for a freebie punt.

However, should he not do much this year, then come alive next year, we'll do well to get 500k for him (2 year contract, see) of which Liverpool will get about a third, probably.

    Are you serious?

Hammill and his agent state there must be a 500k clause - "take it or leave it BFC, we have other clubs interested."

You reckon we should have let him go then?

What, take him swimming on Wednesdays?

Common practice going back donkeys, Derby got 30% of Ashley Ward's transfer fee. It's an exciting signing, well done the club.
