The only joke about that clause is that people still don't understand that offering Hammill a release clause was the only way to get him to sign for us. Had we walked away, the same people would be bashing the club for "lack of ambition" and calling Don Rowing every name under the sun. And presumably if Silva had rejected a longer deal, we should've just withdrawn from talks and had a word with Eastwood, see if they have anyone for us instead. It's a tough concept to understand for a supporter, how a player may look at their club that finished 4th bottom of their division last season, and have no money, and be favourites every year to go down, and think "I'm not signing for 4 years with them" but it happens, deal with it. The only way for a club to get around it is by making the offer more attractive, y'know, like release clauses and shorter term deals.
We beat a champions league team and top flight clubs here and from on the continent for an highly rated winger on a free transfer, yet people are only noticing that in the future we might have to pay something for him.
Re: Are you serious? I really wish we could say to the player and the agent "if you want to play for us then you come on our terms and not yours. If you don't like that then go and take your chances somewhere else". That would be ideal but sadly those days are gone and players and their agents now run the game and dictate the terms they play under. It's all wrong but money and Sky mean that's the way it is and small clubs like BFC will always be submissive party in the transfer negotiations with decent players.
Preaching to the converted, pal. As I've said already, I pointed out the clause in my OP, as it wasn't something we were made aware of upon his arrival last week. That is all. As for Hammill, I agree with what you are saying, also. I just thought the release clause fee was a bit small. And let's be fair, he didn't win us anything in his time here did he? I remember him being very hit and miss in the whole, save for that purple patch prior to his departure. Ah well, least he's gone on to prove what a super player he is....
