Top performance from him. Same goes for Golbourne, Stones & Cywka. All the team played well, even Wiseman at centre half. Middlesbrough on the other hand, looked very average and Steele kept them in the game.
Re: Prefer to look at it agreed mate, there was plenty of talent in their side, with a far bigger budget than us....perfect start for confidence for our lads,,boro are a top 6 club and we looked the better team for a lot of the game.
This has to be dicussed tonight can anyone pick out any negatives from his top class performance? What are his faults because he does get criticism on here?
Re: Prefer to look at it Spot on Kev, I thought our tactics, energy and every player in a red shirt just outplayed them and made them look average. I agree about Perkins, I think he is very important to us and we will miss him if we lose him through injury or suspension. He gets some unjust criticism at times.
Re: Prefer to look at it People that say he just runs around a lot? They ever played any type of football?
Re: Prefer to look at it We missed him last season when he was out for a couple of months with injury. Key player for the team IMO.
Re: Prefer to look at it after that performance anyone who says he offers nothing to the team want to turn there seats around so they are facing the pitch, looked as energetic after 90 minutes than he did after the first min
Re: Prefer to look at it Perkins was top-class. Won a load of tackles and then played simple pass..........exactly what his game is all about. Thought he tired with 15 mins to go and then all of a sudden seemed to find an energy reserve when Dawson came on (who incidentally, also did a superb job). Perkins/Dawson are pivotal to REDS success.......they are hungry ball winners and then give it to somebody who can make things happen ie. Mellis, Etuhu, Done, Cwyka, etc.
I thought Perkins had a much better final product yesterday, ran into good areas with the ball and played defence splitting through balls,I think hillflicker must have worked on this through pre season.I liked him last season but when he got into good areas he just used to stop and look around for anyone to give it to where as yesterday he knew exactly where he wanted to play it and gave the defenders no time to compose themselves. He was MOM for me yesterday, controlled a lot of the game and if he could shoot he would be some player! Although if he's going to carry on being captain he will have to control his temper, got himself needlessly booked yesterday by mouthing off at the ref!
Go on then... in the end he had a very good game and I gave him an 8. However, in the first 20 mins or so, he gave the ball away half a dozen times inside our half by trying to do things beyond his level of skill. For example, he tries to pick the ball up deep and play under pressure ala Butterfield and McPhail in the past, but too often loses it as he hasn't got the same technical ability. My Dad and I were once again talking about how we can't understand why people don't notice this after those first 20-25 mins. As I say though, after that he was much better and cut this out and had an extremely good game. Overall though, I'd suggest he loses the ball nearly as many times as he wins it back. Anyone that disagrees, watch him over the next couple of games you see us and you'll realise.
Can't agree with that Al, though there's a decent point in there somewhere. I think he does give the ball away a bit but I don't think it was constant in the first 25 minutes, there were 1 or 2 examples but it was often after a poor pass to him in the first place that left him needing to try something to get out of trouble.
It depends upon whether those mistakes are costly or not. Likewise, Gonzales flapped at fair number of crosses, but he got away with it. Consensus is that he had a good match. But, on another day....
