days of a good market are gone, peoples attitudes have changed and the majority in barnsley cant see past the end of the supermarket checkout..a market trader can have goods for sale cheaper than the supermarket but it makes little difference to most people, asda, tesco, morrisons and sainsburys is as diverse as many people get....we are about to get yet another supermarket, smack next to morrisons in the town centre.its looking like it'll be either tesco or sainsburys and it will be yet another nail in the coffin of the market trader.
i'd love to see barnsley as a vibrant market town, with the type of market that was there when i was a kid but it wont happen, most market traders i know that stand on barnsley market have had enough of it already, its only the fact that there are no other jobs available thats keeping them trading, otherwise most would pack in...
in my opinion this new supermarket will just make barnsley town centre worse and the only traders will be the large multiples,,,ie,the large supermarkets, greggs, subway, mcdonalds, kfc etc etc..

Barnsley used to be very good for shopping but have lived in Doncaster for the last 65 years and have found that Barnsley is as dead as a doornail. The shopping is so good in the Wheatley/Edenthorpe areas that you don't have to go into town very often thereby saving on petrol and parking charges.

Another Greggs is better than another charity shop?

Maybe if you like mush filled pasties. Other than that I really can't see where you're coming from on any level.

Charitable cause, interesting stock, inexpensive clothing
    versus
Chain taking trade away from local bakeries and food outlets by selling fatty garbage

The trouble with this thread is people saying things like Doncaster has a Debenhams (sorry to pick on that comment). As if this is somehow a good thing. What people need is a reason to go into town. Having yet another retail chain outlet is not a pull. Barnsley needs to concentrate on the markets, local business and **** the high street brands that are killing every town centre in the country.

The curious thing that struck me when I returned to Barnsley last year was how many banks and building societies there were. Can anyone explain that? Surely they can't all be profitable. There's an area at the end of Eldon Street there were every other building is a financial institution.

There's a point near that X where if you stand you can see all the ones circled in green. You might be able to see 6 actually, there's one in the front of The Light which for some reason doesn't show up on that map.

Oh aye. Look at the scale, they're easily within a square kilometre. I know there are at least 3 that are there but aren't on that map as well, so that makes 17.

They have developed it in the years I had moved away, rebuilt harbour hills with the new retail outlets, pets at home dw gym but that is a few years ago now.

Nothing since to mention unless you include the debenhams in a years times and the lidl.

The estate up dodworth seems to be empty with pikeys in the car park, similar to the one up Barugh green.

The thing is its not only about attracting retail development into the area, yes they supply job opportunities but usually (although not exclusively by any means) lower paid / part time positions - they also need to persuade manufacturing and other alike industries into the area where wages can be higher. Jobs are the lifeblood of any area and that is what is required here, if there was a good job market in the area the town centre would not need promoting as both national and local retailers would want to be in a place where there were people with money to spend.

We have 6 Dreamboy, yes only a paltry 6 Greggs! it's not enough we need hundreds more to feed all the scumbags roaming the streets, hungry and clueless.

Made a thread on your pub last month Sir......

    http://v2.barnsleyfc.org.uk/showthread.php?173373-FAO-Border-Terrier

    I'm clearly forgetting some haha.

    1) Aspley.
    2) Down by Queensgate market.
    3) In the Packhorse centre.
    4) The new sit down one on the high street.
    5) The one further on the same street past the pound bakery across from the shitty Commercial Hotel pub.

I thought the web company had ironed out all the bugs - looks fine on my PC and Ipad - what's up with it at your end, and what device are you looking at it on?

thanks for bringing it up tho, thought it was all sorted.

Could be one down there I dunno. I like Greggs. It tastes good, it's cheap and it's fast food on the go that's conveinient. But two Greggs would be enough for the town centre. Three at a push with how packed it gets with college/uni lot.
