    Probably not to most of you, but I'm a bit slow. I didn't know it was still in operation.

    So we've got a company called Oakwell Brewery based in Barnsley making products such as Barnsley Bitter and Oakwell Lager and they've got a number of pubs around the country but not in Barnsley. A Barnsley company producing Barnsley bitter that doesn't sell its products in Barnsley. Why?

    Never understood this one either, although known about them for a while.

    They won a medal at The Great British Beer Festival in August as well. They sell their beer in Sheffield .......

    I am not from barnsley so didn't know it wasn't sold in the pubs. Bizarre really. I presume it isn't sold at oakwell too?

    Yes, it would be common sense to sell it in and around Barnsley and at Oakwell.

    I bet the Dark Mild is bang on. One of the best drinks I have ever had is the Thwaites Dark Mild at Burnley Cricket Club. If it's owt like that I'd balloon to ten stone in a month.

    They have Barnsley Bitter in the Devonshire Cat in Sheff. Lovely stuff. Seems madness nowhere in Barnsley sells it.

    Sheffield is probably the best place in the country for real ales...........Barnsley has got to be, GOT TO BE, the worst
    To my knowledge there is only one real ale pub in the town centre....other than Witherspoons

    And how many real ale proper type pubs are there in the satellite villages and towns...........cant think of any
    Its always puzzled me...........Barnsley is and always has been a place where lots of beer is sold.........but the pubs are garbage
    Dominated by John Smiths and Tetleys slape

    There int a good boozer in the whole district !!!..........probably the nearest we have got to a good pub is the Old No 7

    Norwich is officially the best city for real ale this year, closely followed by York and Sheffield.

    Some of us can still remenber what Barnsley Bitter tasted like

    and I have tasted this new BB and in my mind it doesn't compare.

    Yup, that's where I drink it.

    How many real ale pubs are there in Barnsley? I can only think of Old No. 7 and that's an Acorn Brewery. I guess that's why it's not sold in Barnsley.

    I can't really take issue with you there, but Chennels and Courthouse both sell real ale. There is also a Marstons pub in Peel Square. Courthouse serves a nice enough pint.

    The Barnsley Bitter from Acorn is closer to the old Barnsley Bitter as they've got the same yeast.

    Oakwell Brewery don't have any connections to the beer of old.

    Two Barnsley Bitters?

    If you look at that website it says it's exactly the same recipe and they're on the same site as the old brewery. They're claiming to be the original Barnsley Bitter as brewed since the 19th century so not sure why you think there is no connection. Thought Acorn Brewery was at Elsecar so surely that would be the one with no connection to the beer of old. Also, how can they both have beers called "Barnsley Bitter" how do they get away with that one? Also Oakwell brewery has an Acorn Lager - wouldn't have thought that would go down well with Acoern Brewery.

    Just done a quick google. Acorn is owned by a wombwell couple, the husband used to work for Oakwell brewery but left to start his own business. Oakwell brewery has one director who lives in london.

    Not sure how he could possibly be allowed to leave one brewery to start up a rival one selling products of the same name using the same yeast though.

    goes back to late 70's when john smiths bought out barnsley brewery to get a stranglehold on all the pubs in barnsley ... barrring one or two exceptions beer in barnsley has been p155 ever since

    Still there, does very well. Had a beer/wine shop next to it for years selling allsorts, think that has closed now though.
