125 year of barnsley whats your memmories

Watching Barnsley at Liverpool,got to have been at there best ,asked what our replacement goal keeper was like from a Liverpudlian outside players entrance and i could not tell him ,(thought i was kidding) then home against Chelsea ,Millennium stadium and Cardiff people wanting to buy us celebratory drinks at night.

What a great 21st Birthday present that was.

 

1894-95 season was a belter!!!

 

Beating Liverpool twice, the 90/91 double & 5-2 v Leeds, the victory over Chelsea, 4-0 Birmingham play off semi, 7-1 against Huddersfield and the playoff semi at the Galpharm, Barnards stunner vs Spurs in the 97/98 cup game, dumping Manure out, playoff final v Swansea, Rankin's last second winner to keep us up, Clints last minute goal the seal promotion.

 

Just to name a few

Ten of the best:-
1) Watching us beat Brighton 4-0 at home September 1968, the first time I ever saw us win a game;
2) Beating Grimsby 2-1 to clinch promotion 1978/79;
3) Winning 2-0 at Hillsborough, November 1979;
4) Beating Fulham 3-2 away, January 1981, when Gary Pierce went off injured in the first few minutes;
5) 1-0 victory over Rotherham to clinch promotion 1980/81;
6) The entire 1981/82 league season, along with the fantastic run in the League Cup;
7) Ronnie Glavin scoring the winner at Hillsborough, Easter Monday April 1983;
8) The entire 1996/97 season;
9) The entire 1997/98 season;
10) Wembley 2000 against Ipswich, up to kick off.
Ten of the worst:-
1) My first ever game, a 3-2 home defeat against Barrow, August 1968;
2) Losing 2-0 to Rhyl, FA Cup 2nd Rd, 2nd replay, December 1970;
3) Selling Pat Howard to Newcastle United for £21 000, September 1971;
4) Relegation at the end of the 1971/72 season;
5) Losing 1-0 at home to Workington, October 1974;
6) Losing 3-1 at Marine FA Cup 1st Rd, November 1975, when we were also bottom of the entire Football League;
7) Losing 3-0 at home to Sheffield Wednesday, first game of the 1979/80 season;
8) Wembley 2000 against Ipswich, at the end of the game;
9) Relegation at the end of 2001/02 season;
10) Administration.

hudderfield away in about 1980 even though we lost was one of the best Barnsley games i have ever, think it was a thursday nigt we hammered them it pissed downad springett saved two pens i think

Remember it well

It was towards the end of the 1978/79 season. We were going through a sticky patch results wise as we attempted to clinch promotion. Huddersfield only just managed to avoid re election.

I'll try and think of incidents that still stick in the mind... obviously the highlights are promotions and the premier league season and the glut of wembley trips!!!

Martin Bullocks goal in the 2-2 draw at home to Leicester
Andy Liddell's winner away at WBA in the promotion year to win 2-1... and a new feeling was evident in the fans
Watching Dave Watson have his debut at Derby and being mugged on every cross by Paul Williams ... never seen a goalkeeper said the away following!
Bromsgrove in the cup .... and our away following ripping the corrugated iron off the roof.
Doing the double over Leeds in Machin's first season and avoiding relegation by the skin of our teeth
The opening of the east stand ... til old boy Gary Coatsworth went and ruined it!
Winning at Bramall Lane with Andy Saville's first touch.
The sadness seeing what ultimately were the ending of the careers of Gwyn Thomas, Joe Joyce, Gary Fleming and David Watson.
Witnessing Paul McGugans pre match warm ups ... trying to break the cross bar!
Never feeling as angry at an officials performance as Gary Willards
Having the privilege of 2 "articles" published in better red than dead and actually being asked by Box Office staff .... "did you do that Choose Barnsley" piece?
Thinking we were in the play offs under Machin only to find Brighton had scored an injury time goal at the goldstone
The debuts of Wayne Biggins and David Currie
And the first memory that popped into mind.... and a very random one .... the pink panthers in our 3-3 draw at Stokes Victoria Ground and seeing 21,000 at Oakwell for an evening 2-1 win in the FA Cup that saw Steve Coopers somersault make the BBC credits

 

Certainly was

One of our best performances of the season, but one of the worst results.

wagame which could very very nearly been another hillsboro held back while 2:30 and gate opend at about 3:30

Away at Sheff United (think that was 3-3) was the worst i can remember, although Leicester away was bad too... think we won 2-1 against David Pleats massage parlour XI... always the FA cup!

Trips to both Wembley's, Anfield, Chelsea at home, our trip to the Millennium Stadium, throwing away a 3-0 lead against Stockport County, countless dire away days at Leicester/Coventry, that Grimsby game in the snow, beating Wimbledon on last day after being relegated, numerous trips to Bloomfield Road without defeat, WBA hammering our kids 7-0, I could go on for hours...

Rodger Wylde lying down and laughing with his legs in the air to the "welcome to the home of the Millers" song at a pre-season friendly away at Rotherham one year.

Lee Butler going up front away at Watford.

Ally Millar's free kick when we beat Port Vale 6-2 on Boxing Day.

Thinking we were actually going to win the FA Cup. Twice!

Being 3-0 up at home to Chelsea in the FA Cup at half-time and my dad saying "if we can get another one we've got a chance of winning this".

That moment when we realised we could actually go up to the Premiership (although, looking back at the results, by the time I allowed myself to believe this I think we were already mathematically promoted!)

Redders scoring against West Ham, when we all believed we were going to be good enough to do well in the Premiership.

And some bad

Losing 6-0 at home to Chelsea in front of the TV cameras and realising it was going to be a struggle.

Sitting in the canteen at the hospital I was working at in Liverpool, listening to the last few minutes of the last game of the season with a mate who supported Chester, explaining to him that by beating Boro we had just clinched a place in the play-offs...d'oh!

Richard Wright saving Hristov's header (that was the point we could have gone on and won from, not Barnard's penalty miss) at Wembley.

Those years back down in League One. Far worse than when we were there the last time.

Losing in the FA Cup semi-final. I desperately wanted us to win the Cup.

Ritchie's final game at Palace. Dire is an understatement.

Mick McCarthy leaving. And Wilson. And Redders. And David Hirst. And Currie (the first time). And Vaz Te even.

Seeing all the collection buckets outside Oakwell when we were in administration, whilst people like Sheron were sat in the reserves with protected salaries.

The decline in the crowds and the fortunes of the team in the mid-80s and the reason for it.

The wind that used to howl through that hole at the back of the Ponty and all the rain it brought with it.
