How did we manage to sign Glavin from Celtic? I've just been reading a piece on him, Clarke bought him in June 1979, two season's earlier he was Celtic's top scorer with 26 goals, he had played in 3 consecutive League Cup finals for them and had won his first Scottish cap in 1977. He was 28 when he signed for us so it wasn't past it and yet an old English third division side managed to secure his services.

Dunno, some Celtic fans seem to think he got an injury when he got his first cap. I'd suspect its a bit like Oldham Athletic buying Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink in today's money.

He did an insurance job on his factory and no one would touch him. Allegedly.

I seem to remember it was even odder, as Allan Clarke didn't know what sort of player he was and played him completely out of position at the beginning. I also think we put what then was quite a lot of money on the table. There's an article knocking about somewhere, might be in the "Oakwell Centurions" book.

Think we paid £40k for him and Clarke made him our highest paid player at the time.

One of the reasons is we paid him an awful lot of money

When he came down to talk to us he asked for ridiculous wages, wages he knew for a fact that we wouldn't give him. He just came up with a figure off the top of his head knowing we'd refuse. Glavin went back to Celtic thinking that was that. A couple of weeks later Allan Clarke got back in touch with him and told him we'd give him what he wanted.

Glavin himself confirmed this in an interview he gave with South Riding fanzine. If you know anyone who has a copy of the two editions his interview was in then it's a fascinating read. I don't know why a traditionally tight club could be offering wages much higher than Celtic but that is what we did.

You call your "brand" of annoying, repetitive drivel "wit and intelligence".
It's a bit like calling Hemsworth "intriguing and interesting".

You are a feckwit of the highest order.

    Boo, hiss.

Stop replying with your factually based, sensible posts.

I want to hear that he signed for us because Lord Varguz, leader of the Ecryptons from the planet Rimsplash, told him to. In crop circles.

    You're more than welcome.

    You annoying little backie.

Boards like this are all about contribution.
You contribute nothing. Not a thing.
The last thing you could possibly contribute would be wit, closely followed by intelligence.

You are the Chico of this board.
