wants to put a tunnel in from Lancashire to Yorkshire - was on the local news here but I can't remember his name. wondered if he was a reds fan? #bitofmoney?
Two of the largest conurbations in England, Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire linked together by nothing more than upgraded cart tracks - Snake Pass and Woodhead. It's just ridiculous.
Totally agree. I am over in Greater Manchester about three times a week and I avoid Woodhead like the plague, it's an utterly miserable trek especially over the other side. I always take the Holmfirth road, not quite as direct but much faster and much less congested. That tunnel is a fantastic idea.
Don't agree with the comments made by the MP. Why on earth can't you put a motorway through a National Park? And is Woodhead actually in the National Park? You can travel from Austria into Germany straight through the Alps on a three lane motorway. Stunning scenery much better than the peak district brought within easy reach of the populous to enjoy. M62 over the moors between Leeds and Manchester - similar scenery to Woodhead. It's pathetic in this day and age that there's no fast connection between England's 4th and 5th biggest cities
I do like the idea of the tunnel..............why..........its undercover...........no bleeding snow and 100mph winds Wouldn't live up there for a gold pig...........so what Pat see's in it I dont know..........especially when you think that he could live anywhere
This sounds amazingly expensive, how long would the tunnel have to be? The channel tunnel cost £9billion at the time of opening (almost 20 years ago), so you'd have to say this would cost a similar amount in today's money. I do think something needs to be done though, I suppose the M62 was supposed to fill this gap but it hasn't and Woodhead/Snake are still better options. I'm lead to believe that there have been serious plans to build a motorway from Manchester to the M1 (apparently the Stocksbridge by-pass is one carriageway of what was going to be a full blown motorway that was never completed - the fancy grade-separated junctions would suggest that there is some truth in this) and I wouldn't object to maybe a two lane motorway going through the Peak District but many would. The idea of using the existing Woodhead Tunnel has been brought up a few times, not sure how suitable it would be as a road tunnel but this only covers a short distance anyway, you'd still have to build a fairly hefty road (possibly in new tunnels) to get to Woodhead and then from Dunford Bridge to Tankersley. I think I'll be long dead before anything major is done on this route, it's come up a number of times over the last 20-odd years and nothing has really changed - apart from Woodhead and Snake get closed a lot more often in winter!
because the said MP probably aint on the list of people to get backhanders if it goes ahead,....... just my take on it folks as we all know MP's never try to make a fast buck on the side. hth
Beautiful part of the country, l can see why he lives out there. No so good when you're snowed in mind but some of the scenery is breathtaking. You don't really see much of it from Woodhead and Snake. Pop some boo'its on and get off into the hills.
Tony Hickton, think he's an architect. Tunnel would cost I reckon £100k to £200k per metre. About 4 billion quid.
It'll nivver get built. They cancelled the Motram by-pass because of a few newts or something. Plus it's in the north and we all know the north doesn't matter - no marginal parliamentary seats in the effected constituencies.
Cancel HST2 and let's have some money expended improving the infrastructure in the North. It will create jobs, reduce traffic on M62 etc. etc.
